Here's what I think:

Nickelodeon focuses on quirky fun and humor,

Disney Channel prioritizes charm and morals,

Cartoon Network explores mature themes and variety.

And PBS Kids centers on education and purity.

Haven't watched any of them in years. Nickelodeon was the only one that had a good combo of live action and cartoons. Cartoon Network didn't have much going for them in the 90s. Most of the programming was just reruns which eventually became Boomerang I think.

Their showrunners are brave enough to have lesbian characters, but struggle to make gay guys more than just a cameo for >10 seconds

That's because there are still many mothers who are staunchly against such pairings on kids' shows.

Most of the shows on these networks are about kids and friendship - not about adult relationships. For example, there is no reason to involve adult relationships in Scooby Doo, and when they did they made the worst version.

Nick - standard kids programming. humor, action, the occasional moral.

CN - shows with a bit more substance, and usually more plot-heavy. more mature themes, drama, diversity, inclusion.

Disney - still trying to make teen pop culture icons, I guess? I don't know if I know anything currently on Disney besides Ducktails. Their cartoons are better than their live stuff, though, by a mile.

PBS - educational, for all ages, moral-focused.

You could say the cartoons are catering towards teen pop culturalists too.

As a child, I use to mostly swap between the core three (Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, and Cartoon Network)... That said, I would have also watched PBS after school sometimes... Don't really know why, though...

True. But having gay characters could actually help kids. Would've probably helped me some if I knew some gay guy in a show I watched as a kid to understand it a little better... Just saying...

Yeah, that era was getting tired. And then, Disney went back to cartoons.
