Word processors are absolute next-level hot GARBAGE at making organized nested lists

I'm trying to organize a lot of my thoughts, but nothing out there is capable of making this:

1:
a:
[When typing this, the other two had two tabs in between.]

Or am I wrong? MS Word isn't capable of HALF that, so it seems I need something more dedicated.
