When someone says "it cost 4x more!", when the original price was $10, what does this mean to you?

Does 4x more on $10 result in $40 or $50?

This is objectively $40.
Anyone who says or thinks $50 cannot do math.

I chose $40.

However, I can see the argument for $50. I think it's too literal though.

The correct answer is 50 but I expect most people to use it wrong.

What they should say is "it costs 4 times as much"

It depends on how it's stated. The Topic title is kind of unclear in the stating, and it can be taken a couple of ways.

Saying "it costs 4x more than that", with that equaling $10, might mean that it's $40 more than $10, meaning $50.

However, when I hear 4x more, I hear "4x as much", which would be 4x$10, equaling $40. I think most people (including myself) take it this way.

Think of it in this context:

It costs four times less = $2.50
It costs four times more = $40

I don't think people would say "costs 4 times less" because it's pretty unintuitive what that means.

I think they'd say "it costs a quarter as much" or "it's 75% off".

I know people misuse the phrase, but "more" means that it has to be more. 20% less doesn't mean -20%. And 50% more doesn't mean half as much.

More means more, people misuse it, but people misuses a lot of things.

Agreed thus X + 4X = 5X

It's 4X more

If you have 5 apples, and then get 5 more, how many apples do you have?
