This is fucked up. Video is tough to watch and I don't recommend it. They beat William Jennette before wrestling him to the ground, and put their weight on his back, asphyxiating him. They even mentioned the risk of asphyxiation. How does this continue to happen?

I just can't believe that it's still so hard for society to admit to and agree by now that the main role of the police is and has always been to eliminate the parts of society that the rich and powerful deem are unworthy. Whether by locking them up, or outright killing them.

I really find hard to believe that anyone still buys that serve and protect bullshit

they also beat him to death, lied and blamed his injuries on a car accident, and the department has still taken no responsibility for his death

they have still never officially released that bodycam footage, not even to the family, it was leaked

^Just like I said before.

Pretty much anytime there are accusations of misconduct, the body cams are turned off. Or footage is cut. Or withheld entirely. All that in itself does a very good job of exposing misconduct.

Read that article this morning, too. Shameful and infuriating.

What's even more disgusting is the people who defend this shit "They should've listened! They shouldn't have resisted!" They should've done as they were told!" All absolute bullshit arguments and nothing that warrants being straight-up murdered before you exercise your right to defend yourself in court.

Not in anyway defending what happened on the video - but I had already seen this article elsewhere and the guy was "detoxing" off meth - which is why he was so difficult to handle and required restraint. This happened two days after he was arrested, and apparently the detox process for meth lasts several days and was a contributing factor to his death.

(I know nothing about meth addiction - just information I got from another thread)

That doesn't give any justification for restraining someone for so long.

I mean it seems like this footage is mostly coming from random cameras around and phones, I think most cops turn off their bodycam whenever they are really going beyond the line.

The Chauvin footage if memory serves was from a random person filming it with their phone.

they shouldnt be able to control when the things are filming and it should be a felony to tamper with them or intentional try to stop them from capturing what is happening

Guess my post didn't go through days ago? =x Probably got sidetracked. Meh. Quick thoughts:

How does this continue to happen?

Because 99.99% of the time that move is used, nobody dies? Because most officers were trained to use it by officers who were trained to use it by other officers, all of whom hadn't killed anybody? You see pretty routinely see officers put their knee on suspects' backs while trying to subdue them. And the fact that there are high-profile incidents of people dying when knees are placed on them, most officers have been doing something along those lines for decades without killing anybody and are going to write it off as a fluke. Even if the move was outlawed tomorrow and they started new training, it would probably take a few generations of officers before the move stops being used.

But that's completely untrue. We saw body cam footage right away when cops shot an unarmed white suspect in the back while he was slowly walking away from an officer he never saw. We watched the officer then slam him to the ground and handcuff him while he bled out. And they walked afterward because they claimed there were things happening off-camera.

Granted, that was a white suspect, so there were no riots or anything. It would have been a major BLM protest otherwise.

As for body cams, there are FILM CREWS who have recorded cops putting a knee on grounded suspects to subdue them. You used to see that on cops. You've seen that in some of the viral videos where they're subduing drunks on the boardwalk. It's a common procedure because 99.99% of the time nobody dies from it.

All absolute bullshit arguments and nothing that warrants being straight-up murdered before you exercise your right to defend yourself in court.

Which is straight-up bullshit because clearly the intention wasn't to kill him. And subduing a suspect is inherently risky no matter what. Even if holds involving placing a knee on the suspect were banned, you'd still have a substantial risk of death. People have died just from being wrestled to the ground.

Far-Queue posted...
Nurses deal with detoxing patients all the time without beating and murdering them.

...nurses work in highly controlled environments with large staffs and, when they do accidentally kill somebody while subduing them -- which STILL happens -- it doesn't get the kind of attention it does with police. Not to mention that "all the time" is barely anything compared to the number of times police have to do it. It's probably as deceitful of an argument as you can get.

Zareth posted...

Or at least be a separate crime, because having officers turn off bodycams defeats the point of bodycams.

Inb4 "it was a white guy so racism doesn't exist"

It's almost like police brutality exists independently of race or something. Not that you'd know that from BLM protests and media coverage. And the kicker is if BLM went for something racially neutral, they'd a much easier time getting support, but when you go with shit like BLM and "Defund the Police," you lose a lot of people right away.
