Personal bias says Angel, though these days the nostalgia's somewhat tainted since you-know-who was found out to have done.

It kinda hurts my soul, tbh.

Whedon's abuse towards people. Explains why he did the Cordelia character so dirty on the show.

He did a lot of characters dirty, which even affected season 4 of Buffy when Adam killed his "mother."

Probably explains the whole Spike motivation for getting his soul too, in hindsight. Trying to passive-agressively ruin the actor's perception to the public.

Whenever a show from the late 90s or early 2000s did its characters or actors a dirty, and called it quality drama, I always figure it's some combination of producers or directors deciding they got enough use out of said actor. I say this, being someone who enjoyed Charmed until the end of its second last season.

I wouldn't even limit it to that time period, considering how Supernatural treated Mark Sheppard.

Except that's totally in the same period, at least where the show started.

Well, if we're going to be that pedantic about it, I'd argue that the show didn't start in the early 2000s because it didn't start until 2005.

But in either case the fuckery didn't happen until the late 2010s, so my point was more that this isn't a practice that simply happened in a narrow span of time, but is probably pretty reflective of how Hollywood has always fucked over actors.

Sure, but I count 2005 as part of that era, if barely.

The practice itself is common when you look at the broad picture, yes. What I was suggesting, however, was more of the particular style of pettiness behind such dickery, and how frequent that particular style was in the timespan. There's general Hollywood meddling, harassment, or abuse; and then there's "How dare this person I have a feud with have the audacity to ask for a shred of dignity or respect for their role? Now I must kill them off in a non-subtle and anti-climatic fashion so they can't ever come back." And in some cases pretend the killed character barely existed off-screen, if even that much.
