There was one episode I remember them lifting their house up because the smog was higher that day. I would guess environmental reasons.

Only in the comic revival, where they bring up how all the glaciers melting meant there was little in the way of livable landmass.

There's a wild theory out there that Flintstones and Jetsons were occurring simultaneously.

But, the ground was shown in episode 7.

I guess the real answer is just that the creators thought that was what the future would look like and used it as a hook, the same why people nowadays use the whole chrome look to depict the future or Blade Runner.

They literally just said it was raining and asked the building super if he could do something about the weather.

I wish I was cool enough with my building super to have him make radical changes at a moments notice.

The death rate has got to be really high in the Jetsons world. Especially for flying cars. If their car ever breaks down or run out of gas they are done for.

I find it odd that their freeways had no markers. Like i remember an episode where George would be trying to wait for a gap to squeeze into when he could just fly underneath everybody.
