Been in a lot of pain today in my side after having discomfort for about a week and a half

I did not expect to need surgery, this sucks

I guess I have diverticulitis and an abscess which is what the surgery is for

So like do certain foods trigger it or what? How common are flare ups?

Diverticulitis runs in my family so I'll probably have to deal with it one day. It seems the foods that trigger can vary person to person. Bummer. Hopefully yours is a mild case!

Okay so here is the deal.

in your colon you have little pockets called diverticuli and some way, some how, food particles get trapped in there and it gets infected.

As far as when or why you get a flare up I don't know. Surgery to fix the problem is pretty much to cut out the infected section of colon and stitch it back together.

I had to have an ostomy bag for a month, but my case was pretty bad I guess.

after the surgery things have gotten interesting in the waste department. lots of nugget sized poops. Occasional spells of extreme gas(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvIyVz7BZxA)...I mean I can live with it but I ain't like before.

My PA said I looked really good for my condition, so I'm guessing it isn't too bad, thanks

I really regret coming in, now I'm stuck here and can't leave, I wasn't prepared to stay the night. I had a Dr's appointment scheduled tomorrow anyways so they would have found it out.

Everyone is different but you might want to be careful with nuts and anything that has a bunch of little seeds like raspberries or strawberries.

Look, I get that feeling of wanting to just go home and not have to deal with this, but Diverticulitis is serious* so I wouldn't risk it.

Serious* because according to my surgeon a lot of people, especially older people, do not get surgery to fix it, but just live with flare ups. I don't know, a diverticulitis flare up for me felt like somebody twisting a knife in my abdomen on my left side. BUT as far as I know, diverticulitis itself isn't deadly or anything, just lots of pain during flare ups.

Mine was pretty bad, I guess. The doctor told my mom during surgery that I was really sick...For me, once I found out what it was and had surgery on the horizon, I didn't bother to report flare ups, also because I had a lot of antibiotics which help lessen those flare ups. So I could tell I was having one but it wasn't bad at all because antibiotics. The ostomy bag, for me, was because of how bad it was, they put that in to give my colon a rest for a month to heal up before they converted it back.

So overall, this wasn't too bad everything considered. Good to hear yours might be a lot less severe. In either case, I don't feel like this is a life threatening thing but flare ups suck so good to get it taken care of early.

If it's mild enough, you may just have to eat more fibre moving forward. That bulks up your poops, so they do a better job of stretching out your colon and clearing debris out of any outpouchings you have as they pass through, which prevents that debris from causing infections as it rots (this is good advice for everyone, actually, regardless of any history of diverticulitis). An abscess, however, is a very serious infection, so it's good that you've gone in for treatment. Leaving that untreated could outright kill you, or at least cause much more serious damage.

I didn't mean that I didn't want to go in at all just that it would have been nice to find out beforehand that I needed surgery instead of going in expecting to just get some antibiotics and having all my plans thrown out the window

Also I now have to stay multiple days, I thought I would be going home today but now they're saying I have to wait until Thursday or Friday so that's really demoralizing

Yeah, unexpected hospital stays suck. There's really no way around that.

If I found out from the scheduled DR's appointment today at least I would have expected it beforehand

Everything seems to be going so slow, I get that there are a lot of people that need help but they were talking about getting me out today but I still have no idea what they're going to do.

Last night they said I was either going to go into surgery or just get the abscess drained but I just got an MRI today and no answer to what they're doing

I'm doing a lot better, glad I didn't have to go into surgery but still have to at some point after this heals

I still have a drainage bag in, that hurts at times, but as far as my colon goes, it feels 100%

Yeah, my grandpa developed it and peanuts would cause a flare up for him. Which irritated him, because he loved loved loved peanuts.
