Pretty much every state mandates that tipped employees actually get paid the actual minimum wage, if tips don't cover the gap.

Its weird to me that theres no chain restaurant that advertises that they dont accept tips and pay their workers a fair wage. Feels like thatd be a viable marketing strategy to give them a leg-up over places like Applebees and TGIFridays.
[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Never heard of that before. Does that mean that the restaurant assumes theyll get a tip and takes 2% of the bill so its also getting part of the tip? If so, that should actually be illegal.

Its a businesss job to pay its workers, not the other way around.

Underpaying workers in favor of a system that requires kustomer to pay extra to kover worker's basic wage should be banned. Genuinely wanting to give extra to a worker for doing a good job (or just brighten someone's day) is a fair game.

tipping is part of a scam. It began as gratuity, then it became a substitute for wages. Then they added other fees and surcharges in addition to the tips.

try getting something like uber eats and see how you have a delivery fee, a service fee and a tip on top of that, plus taxes, of course. What is the delivery fee? And if you have a delivery fee why is there a service fee, and why are they separate from the tip?

I wish more restaurants did their own delivery. Uber eats is more double the price of its food and that's without tipping. California has a "California Driver Fee" on top of the service fee/delivery fee and taxes.

I don't inherently mind tipping as a concept.

What bugs me is forced tip collation. Why I don't like to tip electronically.

If I'm tipping I want the tip to go to the individual. Not be collated into some side account that the owner surely skims some off of the top of and then divides the remainder between the servers.

You realize the reason they do that now is because people don't tip, right? The companies are legally on the hook for compensating for the difference (90% of the companies out there don't do this, so stop pointing to this absolutely pathetic law that isn't enforced at all). So when they realized the staggering number of people not helping to pay for their employees, they got mega in your face about tipping.

I doubt the system is going to break anytime soon. The U.S. was handily transformed into a production nation to a service (see: slave) nation.

But hey, maybe we can all finally topple the powers that be, yeah? That would be neat.

The company collects pay from you that it gives part of to the employee. You're paying their goddamn salary whether you like it or not (you shouldn't have to have that cost hidden from you to placate your own worthless ego). Just pay the server directly with cash and cut out the company and the government. That's how you fuck the system and stand by people in this current system until it collapses (which, thankfully, with unemployment doing what its doing, soon, no one will be serving anyone...guess everyone found that "better job" everyone likes to point to).

Most people will still tip. Often its because people have worked in service , then pay it forward to support local business etc.

In most states , servers are paid the federal minimum wage. Which is like 7.25$ I believe. And then they have to declare their tips. And if the tips arent above the state mandated minimum wage , the business has to pay the difference. So lets pretend that is 11$ per hour , then it's assumed that server will make 4$ per hour. If not they are still covered by the business.

In the meantime , the servers usually pay out hosts and cooks. This differs bigly.

Every place worth a shit , the servers and bartenders are usually making massive profit. Well to do people will average a 20% tip , so a 100$ bill often leads to a 20$ tip. With each server having several tables per hour in a shift of several hours.

You can see how someone can make a hundred dollars or more per night cash , after taxes and payouts , by walking a plate of food to your table , smiling , and refreshing your soda. Working less than 8 hours and a cash tip is proly going right in their pocket. The average American is extremely generous. I know many servers who live like min rockstars, flying to Vegas etc and with heavy drug habits , while not working that hard. And i myself reap in hundreds of dollars from them aside from my check.

Servers are largely spoiled imo. Service is going to shit. If i had a table of 6 friends and racked up a bill of 400$ , you think I have to pay 80$ to the server? Fuck that. I will give you 20$ and you are welcome. I will pay 20% on a reasonable bill but expecting huge amounts of money because youre beautiful and you brought me a plate is bullshit. I would go back to the kitchen and give it to the chef and cooks personally , and yes that does happen. I know girls that make more money than strippers from bartending.

Severs like get paid tips because they can hide what they actually make from the IRS.

I was a manager at a restaurant back in the 90's/2000's and every Monday morning we would check the tip reports. The servers knew exactly what to report so that their paychecks = ZERO.

They would report that they made $150 on a full work week, when everyone knew that they were pulling $600 to $700 a week in tips.

Weird. Same was said about what would happen if McDonalds paid a $15 minimum wage in Seattle. Yet, their Big Mac is the same price as mine outside of that demographic.

Places can make a killing on food. Or did you think that $14 plate of fettuccini Alfredo actually costs $14 to make
