It's because it's near literal for every Spanish-speaking family to have at least one Maria. It's like an unwritten rule or something.

Makes sense, what with Catholicism and Spanish-speakers being an iconic duo. I know an Irish Catholic woman named Mary (well shes not really Catholic but her mom was).
