Ive heard of people being scared of empty rooms before, for some folks it has to do with horror films cause movie sets dont often have a lot of clutter and dont look like someone is actually living there

It's generally an empty space that one would normally not expect to be empty. Like going to the grocery store at 2 AM when there's almost nobody there. Or a mall where all the stores have closed. I've experienced the latter and it's creepy as heck. Not a soul around and the only sound is your own footsteps echoing down the corridors.

Considering I spent a bunch of weekends as a kid scaling a huge building in Manhattan and so saw lots and lots of empty giant rooms that would (eventually) be filled with cubicle walls, I always found the idea of liminal spaces to be really comfy.

like I could just find a spot in a corner and sleep for hours

Yeah, my dad used to work security for the building, so I had a keycard to get into what felt like an endless labyrinth of boardrooms and cubicles

Except on the 12th floor. Someone had a life-size Power Ranger there that scared the SHIT out of me

Here's a video from a guy breaking down what, in his opinion, makes a good liminal space.

But I don't think they're supposed to be unsettling/upsetting to look at, so much as they're meant to instill a subtle mood. Like how a Christmassy-looking picture evokes a Christmassy feeling.
