A recent poll shows that nearly half of americans have BANNED MONOPOLY on family game nights because it causes FIGHTS over sore losers and cheaters!!

1/5 people have shelfed the game at home because of family scuffles and most have banished all of hasbro's popular game because of it

44% of people surveyed said they have banned the game where family game nights became popular during the pandemic

20% said it was often or always disrupted by competitive or unfriendly behaviour including outbursts by those losing or someone accusing another player of cheating or 2 or more getting into argument over property rights

Competition brings out the best in some people but the worst in others said Justin Kemppainen who is the director of Z-Man Games....

71% of boomers over 57 say they've never had a problem however compared to 57% of Gen Xers and 38% of millennials and 24% of Gen Zers

Other games that families have banned are UNO at 37%, Sorry! at 27%, Scrabble at 25% and Jenga at 24%

My friend figured out how to make it fun yesterday. Create a bunch of cards (or get a spectator) that are "government decrees" and "natural disasters" (ie, random events) that shake up the game to make it much stupider (since it's just bad played right). For example, due to excessive police brutality, there are riots in the rich half of the board and property values and rents are halved, an earthquake struck and each player needs to pay 1/4 the price of each of their houses to repair them, the government passed a stimulus to incentivize business growth and each player gets $500 they must spend immediately, etc. It makes it impossible to take the game seriously which is half the issue of Monopoly as is

Whenever i start that game, i know there's only between a 10-70% chance of it actually finishing, depending on the players. I love it, but not many people are as focused as i am

Diplomacy is probably the most unpleasant game in my humble opinion

As a general rule, games that take a minimum of 3 hours, are borderline luck-based, snowball, and are mostly just going through the motions for that whole time are not games that tend to be very popular.

if everyone hates it because its fundamentally awful then how did everyone play it and have many different versions of it

Monopoly is just not really a good game for adults because of many of the reasons state. As an adult, it's much easier to find games with more critical thinking and strategy, and if that's not your forte, there are still better party and luck based games out there that generally have a more consistent "feel good" atmosphere and don't take near as long.

As a kid, I think Monopoly is perfectly fine. It gives kids a stab at a different kind of genre over what many of the other kids games represent, and if they take a liking toward it, they will find many better games.

I can respect Monopoly as an important gateway game, but I don't find it very appealing to play anymore.

I'm not really sure how Monopoly took off in the first place, other than maybe the lack of games like it, but Parker Bros. originally dismissed the game as too unwieldy and disinteresting when the creator tried to sell it to them.

As for why there are so many versions, marketing. Nobody actually plays these Monopoly games.

The problem is that kids don't play with the actual rules. (TBF, most adults don't, either.) About the only thing Monopoly is good for with kids is teaching them what it's like to handle money and helping them with numbers skills.

Played Monopoly with the family the other night.

Managed to get 1 of every color property except for getting both Boardwalk and Park Place. Built up to hotels on Boardwalk/Park Place and we continued to roll for an interminable amount of time to the inevitable end result of me winning because no one else could get a monopoly.

I can't remember the last time I played Monopoly, and I'm not sure I've ever actually completed a game of it.

We played it once during the early days of the pandemic. My roommate that had never played it and had no idea what she was doing steamrolled over the rest of us, lol.
