Memo Fachino, a 35-year-old from Racine, Wisconsin, was informed late last month by his homeowners association that he and his husband, Lance Mier, 36, were no longer allowed to fly their Pride flag despite it hanging on their porch since 2016.
We believe its important to express ourselves, and to have visible representation, Fachino told HuffPost via email.
Fachino also explained that the flag has had a significant ripple effect. He noted that, a few years ago, he received a letter expressing gratitude for their flag from a neighbor who was struggling with gender identity at the time.
It gave them hope that, even if they werent finding the acceptance they needed in their current home, they knew they would be able to find that in the community, Fachino said.
Fachino explained in a now-viral Reddit post that due to other homeowners displaying Black Lives Matter, Thin Blue Line and other opinion flags around his neighborhood, his HOA had decided to ban any flag other than the American flag from being displayed in front of homes.
The board did express that if we, or anyone for that matter, could come up with wording that would allow neighbors to fly opinion or political flags without controversy, that they were open to reviewing the rule, Fachino told HuffPost. This is, as you can imagine, not super easy, as what one considers controversial can be quite subjective.
Fachino said that he has no malice toward his HOA and does not feel targeted or attacked by the board, but the couple found having to remove their flag right before Pride month to be disappointing.
We wanted to have a Pride display for June, and we wanted to abide by the rules, Fachino said. So we found a way to do both.
Fachino said a few days after he and Mier took down their Pride flag, they had a lightbulb-over-the-head moment.
They looked through their HOAs new rules and noticed that removable lights are permitted without restriction.
So Fachino and Mier decided to buy six different colored floodlights and washed our house in Pride colors.

Pssst....most people here don't own a home and don't understand things like HOA's. That said, HOA's are almost universally run by a group of busybody nerds who all think alike and determine what everyone else's house should look like.

So it sounds like the HOA board (which represents the homeowners), voted to ban all flags except for the American flag (which is pretty common in most HOAs), so the family was forced to take down their pride flag and found a loophole in the HOA regulations to celebrate pride month a different way. Does that about summarize it?

This is basically a non-story aside from the pretty cool solution the family came up with. The article makes it sound initially like they were targeted specifically for celebrating pride month. But the fact of the matter is that this was an ongoing HOA rule change which just happened to be timed around pride month (whether this was intentional or not is not outlined in the article so we don't know). I get annoyed by clickbait articles that try to drum up controversy by zeroing in on an issue without the surrounding context. This one at least provided the context later on, but not all articles do.

HOAs suck, but really they are like any other government body. The problem is most people don't show up to the board meetings where these kinds of things are voted on. I live in an HOA (for another two weeks; just bought a house to get the heck out of here), and it hasn't been too bad because I've been pretty involved and have motivated neighbors to vote for things that are important to me.

It sounds like flags have been a consistent problem at that neighborhood and the residents voted to just remove them. People can either start an initiative to vote to get them back, or find other ways to get their message across. Sounds like this family came up with a creative solution. I'd say they just need to make sure to stay involved at the board meetings so that solution isn't stuck down as well.

Idk what that is but the point of HOA is to make the value of the houses go up and people think the neighborhood is nice by dictating how houses look and using fees to have like a public pool and to cut grass not on private property.

In a place with no HOA, you don't get a public pool like that and may have lots that have grass not cut in months.

Also can have rules like no loud parties as that can tank a neighborhood very fast.

To be fair, HOAs are ridiculously hard to judge when you are house shopping. You can look at things like the HOA fees and some general regulations regarding parking and yard toys, but have you seen the HOA manuals? They can be over 100 pages long. If a person is shopping around for houses, there is no realistic way to review that many HOA manuals for every little thing.

Most HOA things you learn from living there.

ScazarMeltex posted...

Also, this.

My wife and I lived in an HOA for a year before buying our new home. We live in a high-HOA area where the cheapest homes are found there since they are constructed in batches. You will find more and more HOAs in bedroom communities near major metropolitan centers, and non-HOA houses are becoming rare in these areas.

Consider yourself fortunate if you live in a place where HOAs are not that commonplace. They are becoming the norm in more places around the US.

While you are not completely off with this statement, it does exaggerate the cost of HOA housing.

https://cpb-us-e2.wpmucdn.com/sites.uci.edu/dist/e/2915/files/2019/06/JUE_Manuscript.pdf

We find that houses in HOAs have prices that are on average at least 4 percent, or $13,500, greater than observably similar houses outside of HOAs.

Also, whether we like it or not, HOA housing is becoming more and more common around the country, with a majority of new houses being built in HOA communities. The trend is expected to continue.

In the U.S., nearly 60 percent of recently built single-family houses, and 80 percent of houses in new subdivisions, are part of a homeowners association (HOA).

The "ghetto" neighborhood in the community here are split between manufactured homes in trailer parks (with management who basically acts like an HOA) and apartments for rent (which are even more controlled than HOAs).

The non-HOA houses are mostly farms and properties with acreage where the land shoots up the price of the houses.
