My last job was the first time I'd heard of that. They denied my honeymoon because I didn't have enough vacation time and they don't allow requests for time off without pay

That's the point at which it goes from being a request to you telling them you aren't going to be there and they can either cover those days or not

It's not that uncommon
Something like shift work it's common to refuse leave requests since that means redoing a schedule usually
And for higher responsibility ones it means finding cover
Like I can take time off paid or unpaid (my choice) but it means calling in two people to cover me

Employers wouldn't do this if people stood up to them. I'd leave my job to go on my honeymoon, and then just find a new job.

My company forces you to use paid time off if you have it. If not then yeah, it's unpaid time off.

Its not even something that needs coverage, it was a call center.

They did this for callouts. If you didn't schedule another day to work, they took it out of your vacation time. The reason I didn't have enough is I had to take a few days.off to take care of a roommate that got hit by a car, and they wouldn't count it as sick time.

My company is pretty good about letting us advance paid time off. You can't do that?

This. I'm not as anti-employer as most of CE, but this is a case where you have to put yourself first. I don't know what your job is, but most places right now are understaffed. They'd rather keep you on and tell you to not do it again.

Edit: Oh you work at a call center. Yeah you might be losing your job, but a lot of places are hiring.

Nope. I didn't have enough so they denied the whole thing and wouldn't discuss it further.
