Overall as a game I want to play? I prefer Ultimate

Better to watch as an Esport? Melee is the best, but I still like watching Ultimate

I want to say Melee, but I also think that one has a HUGE nostalgia bias towards it for me (hey, at least I admit it).

I mean, that game was a huge deal- it expanded the series in every way possible and it was a hell of a lot of fun to play. Plus the memories I have of playing with my buds for hundreds of hours definitely help that game look even better.

That said, Ultimate is still a fantastic game, and kids in like their teens or younger (my age when Melee came out) are going to be looking back on it in twenty years about how amazing it is the way I am with Melee.

I'd rank them similarly but Ultimate's balance has really maintained itself well in an offline environment, so there's a lot of variety in the scene that Melee can struggle with some events. Melee has better peak play tho

i definitely wish the garbage characters weren't irredeemable trash tho.

Zain is kicking ass with Roy. There's only 5 characters rated worse than him. Someone like Ganondorf isn't brokenly good, but he's good enough that you can absolutely dominate locals. 11-13 tournament viable characters +8 or so more that are viable in locals is fantastic.

Melee is more fun to execute in and overall play competitively,

That said, Ultimate is still a lot of fun casually, and is the one my friends play with me (cause they get waxed by my Falco in Melee)

Ultimate is incredible in it's own right, and I'll even still go to tournaments for it, but high level Melee feels second to none. There's a reason the playerbase has followed this game for so long.

Ult is also insanely better than S4 and S4 wasn't ever as engaging as either of them.

PM is an honorable mention but it's kind of too jank to take seriously.

oh this is 100% my least favorite thing about ultimate. as a huge stickler for responsiveness in video games it legit put me off the game for a long while. still don't bother with online, which is such a shame because i actually had a lot of fun with smash 4 3DS online which was buttery smooth by comparison

my "never gonna happen" hope was that a new more powerful switch model would allow for the game to not have delay out the ass

after playing both, I think melee might have the tighter controls. I love Ultimates roster, but my god the amount of times I tried turning to pick something up and it just wasn't as responsive. Maybe its my controller, but that's just what I feel. World of Light is fairly good, but I do wish it had less fill and more substance. It just became repeating battles one after another just with different characters.

Ultimate has the better roster, obviously. But my friends and I always went back to Melee, and I don't know why. Perhaps the controls?

Melee

The depth of the engine and the amount of control you have over your character is off the charts. I can't think of another game that gives you as much control. It just feels really good to play above all else.

Brawl was literally made to be an antithesis of Melee and that means sacrificing control. Every Smash game since Brawl has readded more stuff from Melee but never has quite gotten the control right because they are intentionally keeping the controls bad since making them good would be too much like Melee.

There is absolutely no reason for input buffer as crazy as it is in Ultimate.

It's so unlike Nintendo too. What other Nintendo platformer does weird input buffer shit? Every Nintendo 2D platformer I've played had good controls. I think limiting their strength just because Sakurai hates Melee like a bastard child is the pettiest thing I've ever heard of.

My main gripes with Ultimate beyond the still nerfed movement is just the flow of gameplay. Melee is fun because once you earn the hit, you can capitalize and land more hits if you are good. In Ultimate, you just land one hit, they get hit, float gently away, and you do it over and over. There are some combos in Ultimate but I'm just speaking about keeping offense on, not strictly combos. Some matchups are okay in Ultimate, but some are absolute grind fests because camping is so powerful when you can't keep the offense on.

Also I never understood the two people grabbing ledge thing and I don't get why some characters have dummy good recoveries for no reason.

The things I like more about Ultimate is the surface level content. More characters, better graphics, more music, more stages, custom stages, more items, and I will say that some of the characters have interesting ideas. Also 8 player Smash can be fun. It's not enough for me to call it the better overall game though

Ultimate, pretty easily. After Melee, they kept fucking up Ganondorf so I was excited af when I saw that he got his old aesthetic (basically) back. They finally did my boy up good, love his voice and victory animations. Also helps that he's actually good now, lol

I have fond memories of Melee but it's just such a broken piece of dogshit in so many ways. There's really only like 3 characters tops that I can tolerate using in that game, whereas Ultimate literally has like 20 that I enjoy playing

I played Melee like 2-3 years ago, thought it was the most clunky shit I've played. My friends taught me all the techs, but I didn't understand why I needed to be so fucking busy with my controls for every little dumb movement when I could just play Ultimate. Meanwhile I don't exactly like any of the top tier characters either. Marth was probably the most fun I guess

Competitive Melee is cool to watch, but it's also been like decades. I feel like I've seen it all before. It's been years since I legit saw something that I felt like was fresh

Yeah me neither. Doesn't matter that much if you don't play competitively or against people who understand the techs though, I used to stomp with Ganondorf against pretty much anyone and he's considered shit-tier in Melee

I just looked up tier lists for both games and wtf, Ganon is bottom tier in SSBU??! God dammit...
