Personally, I haven't read a piece of fan fiction in roughly a decade. I've only read a few in my life. I don't have enough time to read, play, and enjoy all the official stuff I want to, let alone the less-than-stellar stuff that fans write, so it's just not for me.

What about you?

Yeah. I like to read and it has the advantage of being easily accessible and free, which is nice when you don't have a lot of cash to spare for entertainment. Most of its junk, but there's enough decent to good stuff to read.

I used to. It was really hard to find something interesting, well written (including grammar and punctuation), and complete. I stopped after a few years.

No :/ I usually have a hard time caring about something that's noncanon. I know it's dumb but I can't get over it. Makes me sad when my GF reads a fanfic about x files or whatever that sounds really good and I wish it were real. I try to read it too but my brain always reminds me it's fake (more fake that tv show I guess lol) and I shouldn't care.

I'm starting to feel like any work written involving long-running collaborative media these days is little better than most fan fiction. Comic books definitely so, but it seems to be creeping like a rot into most media.

I think it's rooted in something that comic fans were talking about decades ago - the original comic book writers were people who grew up reading the classics of literature, who aspired to be "real" writers, and who mostly wrote comics as an aside. Then the second generation of writers were people who still had eclectic influences, but who saw the medium itself as something worthy, and tried to elevate the art-form.

Now most people in comics seem to be people who just grew up reading comics, so they don't have a huge pool of experience to draw from, with the end result that a lot of the stuff they wind up writing feels like retread fanfic.

Pop culture has sort of become a snake eating its own tail.

No. I've generally disliked it on a fundamental level and, to top it off, most is extremely poorly-written and overly fan service-y. And considering how much genuine content is out there, there doesn't really seem to be much incentive towards fan content.

Granted, if we're talking a fan comic where the art is good, I might check that out.

Not to mention the complete outsiders who get into comics and other fringe media to push their personal agendas and try to change the culture. It certainly doesn't help that some of these individuals would just as soon see the medium die.

Hey now, Snowflake and Safespace were the greatest new comic book characters of our generation, how dare you.

Also, Kevin Smith adding the the DEEP LORE of Batman by making it canon that he pissed himself the first night he went out on patrol really added to the character and made him way more multifaceted.

Or Grant Morrison coming up with the entire idea of "secondary mutations" because they wouldn't let him use Colossus, and Grant Morrison does not give a fuck about your continuity or common sense. Fuck you, Beast is a cat now bitch!

I've been seeing a lot more lately than I used to. I tend to drop fan fics pretty quick, most are OP fantasies where the MCs have personality disorders just magically solving all the problems the real MC had in the source material and their solutions somehow never change the direction the story goes and get really boring really quick.

There are some that are good, but they all get dropped, except for one I can think of right now anyways.

She's not. A hipster weirdo possessed by the Phoenix Force used his powers to fix her.

But the X-Men comics in general are a bucket of warm shit these days, so it's not like any of it matters any more.
