i had my doubts, but ffxiv is real good

Did some of the beginner questing and now have a lvl 10 rogue (first day). I'm really digging the game, thought i'd hate it and installed it so I could say I played it and it was dogshit.

I was wrong

I was planning on mainlining to dark knight, but i'm loving the dps out of the rogue, that class evolves into a ninja right? What other melee dps classes are worth since I feel i'll be leveling multiple.

if you're enjoying the base game then you're very likely gonna love HW a lot

Yes rogue turns into ninja at 30. As for other melee classes, they are all pretty good. You can unlock pugilist (that turns into monk) and lancer (that turns into dragoon), samurai unlocks for you once you get to level 50 on any class.

I'm really digging the ability to swap classes on the fly. My main issues in any MMO, hell, any RPG including stuff like Mass Effect, is I get bored with a certain playstyle after a time and end up restarting a bunch and just quit the game.

i strongly recommend sticking w/ 1 class till 80 since ff 14 has a thing called the armory system which provides an exp boost to all classes lower then ur highest lvl

tho keep in mind if u want dark knight mechanist or astralogian u need to reach heavensward in the story. it would be nice if they patched those to be obtainable in the ARR areas like samurai red mage dancer gunbreaker and... presumably sage and reaper once the expac hits in november

Dark knight has the best story out of them all. Really worth it coming from a Drk main. Also Pay attention to the main story. It pays off so much afterwards.

Even things in shadowbringers reference stuff from a realm Reborn. That's how much they thought ahead.

It gets a lot better. Heavensward is amazing and it keeps being good from then on. The most recent expansion, Shadowbringers, is the best part by far, and one of the best stories in all of Final Fantasy.

Yeah, I've been told it's very good so I eventually will push through it once in a lull with other games/more time. Just wish I'd been told beforehand the initial story was lacking and not sold on the worth of its story in similarity to TOR (which amusingly gets worse in its DLC, not better >.>)

ARR does have a lot of search for the primal of X people and fight it, but there is a good story that starts up right before Heavensward and continues throughout. After that all the expansions have an actual story beyond fight primals.

That's not possible for main story quests because they're all extremely easy. Actual hard content is completely optional. I have done main story content where the tank got disconnected. It's not that big a deal if someone sucks.

@pogo_rabid Excuse me but why am I just now hearing about this?
FFXIV is absolutely amazing. The original base game is the weakest part, but that's for very obvious reasons, etc. The first expansion and onward is when the game really hits its stride and becomes absolutely amazing. Especially once you hit the current expansion....legitimately peak final fantasy.

Now that i'm out of the super earlygame, I can feel it picking up. I was making the mistake of doing lots of side quests and was mega overleveled for the story content. I have a decent grasp on the pacing now.

The community is pretty friendly when running dungeons. But when you go to end game raids, it can be a mixed bag. However my experience with raids in the past has been positive overall, just a lot of giving up after 1 wipe.

Every role has a different limit break, which is a shared bar across the entire group.
Ranged: A straight line dealing high damage to all enemies in it
Magic DPS: A large circular high damage aoe
Melee DPS: High damage single target(higher than the others)
Tank: Party-wide damage reduction
Healer:Heal at lvl 1, full(ish?) heal at lvl 2, full heal + raise on all dead players at lvl 3(8-player duties only)
Generally you never use tank lb....pretty much for any reason that isn't a scripted usage of it, or unless you're cheesing something
Healer LB is completely worthless unless you have healer LB3, full stop, at which point it's very useful
The damage limit breaks scale with the level of the limit break, doing more at lvl 1,2, 3 etc. You should only ever be using them in particular in dungeons. And yeah, I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it. What server are you on?

doing lots of side quests

Don't do any side quests that aren't unlock quests (have a plus sign on them). You absolutely don't need any of things they offer and will be over leveled from just doing the main quest. Save those for a side job or if you think the lore is particularly interesting in a given place.

After my second time in The Wanders Palace (as in the first post ARR main story dungeon) for months I gave up partying as much as possible and completely skipped any dungeon not part of a patchs story and even those I only did once. I would only get my tomestones from Beast Tribe quests and the 24 person raids (since I figured me sucking wouldnt be as noticeable). Eventually near Heavenswards release I forced myself to go through each dungeon and Hard Mode Primal (but not Coils and I think extreme Primals) once because I felt I had to catch up. Going through Heavensward was mostly fine, but I would get kind of stressed before each dungeon. While I did do the max level dungeons this time (but not Alexander), the stress got worse and worse as the patches continued. It got to the point that logging in would stress me out.

We have a couple people in our guild who don't want to do any hard content and it's fine. Some people want to craft, decorate their house, or just enjoy the story. Only do stuff you enjoy.

Having played for 5+ years I promise no one cares about individual performance outside of endgame extreme/savage content. Most of the content boils down to dodging AoEs and remembering any gimmick mechanics a dungeon boss might throw at you. If you know how to play your class then all you have to do in any duty is wing it, or ask your party about any mechanics to look out for, or even watch a video guide of whatever you're about to run beforehand if you wanna feel extra comfy.

back on topic w/ limit breaks it's not always advisable to pop a dps lvl 3 lb asap in 8 mans as it's possible for ur party to get into a bad situation (ppl messing up mechanics or somethin) and most of the party dies in which case a lvl 3 healer LB can salvage the situation and u pretty much never manage to get a 2nd lb 3 prepped b4 the encounter ends

so basically be wary of the boss's current HP % b4 firing off ur LB 3 as a dps.. my personal rule is to sit on it till around 10-15%
