It was almost always pointless to call the cops for these shoplifters, so at some point we just didnt bother anymore. Also, if there are ever any issues like some homeless guy trying to take a nap, they'd be the ones who deal with the trespasser and if they return the security guard would be the one to tell them they're not allowed in. Also, having someone to keep an eye on this stuff is helpful because as pointed out earlier, tracking what's being stolen and the thief is important. Not all stores have all aisles covered from several directions via cameras. And there's a few other basic things security does.
