Every single walgreens I ever been in has been understaffed and understocked. They clearly aren't paying anyone enough to do anything
It's more likely they would be charged with a crime if they did anything.

speaking as a former security guard albeit in a much safer location, security guards don't get paid enough to deal with bullshit. They also have a lot of restrictions placed upon them before they can even do their job. I was a roaming security guard that dealt with handling security of abandoned buildings and construction sites. We were only given a uniform. We had to provide our own vehicle, flashlight, cell phone, and weren't allowed any form of protective weaponry for fear and I quote "it would be taken away from us and used against us". Mind you, the pay was fairly good for what I was doing, at 12 bucks a pop back when min. wage was 8 dollars an hour, but after gas for the vehicle your still barely breaking even. I did however clear out a Jumbo Video in about a month with all the movies I was watching, and only really had maybe 1 incident which amounted to nothing.

The reason no one calls the cops is because cops won't do shit. I worked security at a mental facility for 3 years (Best job of my life btw, we didn't have to do shit. Just walk around scanning bar codes placed throughout the facility, all the wards were locked up, and they had their own staff to deal with unruly patients.) Point being, I watched on cameras as 4 people were breaking into cars, and stealing batteries. Had them on camera, what they looked like, where they were going and what they were stealing. Called the cops and they shrugged their shoulders and I cannot make this up, said to me "whose to say that one of the nurses or patients on one of the wards didn't call them and ask to take their battery".

A security guard could be doing their job and someone either fights back or claims assault and we're fucked. Nothing we can do about it, because at the end of the day, there are no laws protecting security guards from criminal charges while working.

Its hard for cops to do anything. These things happen in 20 seconds. Nobody had a good description or knows who the suspect is. Half the time the cameras arent up. The cameras are up but the manager is the only one that can access. But shes not in today. Only corporate can access the cameras. The cameras are live feed only.

its a misdemeanor most of the time. We arent even allowed to arrest on those anymore.

I noticed some companies came up with a great idea. They save the video. Once a month, half a year, etc. they come into a station and hand it all over to detectives. They start noticing trends, see who can be identified. Then warrants are issued, etc..

California passed a proposition years ago that reclassified theft of property with a value under $950 as a misdemeanor. SF has also been defunding their police department and reducing the number of officers recently so... this is what you get. There's not really anything they can do, besides closing down stores.

So wait, you're telling me that in SF anyone can just go in any Walgreens and steal shit? Fuck. Why doesn't everyone there do it then? I mean if no one is gonna do anything, might as well. Especially since the Walgreens corporation can afford it.

When you create a culture of lawlessness with movements trying to defund the police, you can't be terribly surprised when people blatantly rob places in front of witnesses.

And, because of liability issues, employees are actually discouraged from stopping thieves.

This is not in the top 1 trillion things affecting anyone's lives or causing anyone problems. Stealing is not good, but far more harmful behaviors are taking place by far more powerful people on a far larger scale as we have multiple topics about a guy in a Walgreens somewhere because it fits a political and cultural agenda for some.

So if someone came into your house and stole your stuff how would you feel? @legendary_zell

The real question is why hire a security guard at all? They arent legally allowed to stop shoplifting with force anyway even though they should be.

if the security guard is just there as security theatre, it would be cheaper to make the security cameras more prominent
As others said, to scare people. But also to monitor looters and what they look like to help cops find them faster/easier.

No longer are we in the days that security/loss prevention can act like bouncers and man handle and even chase after thieves. Corporations these days really care about their image and have increasingly become very socially liberal and don't want PR nightmares to happen. Human life is worth more than theft.

Also the BLM movement has become a double edged sword. People are taking advantage of the movement (and covid) by looting, and a lot of corporations are legit scared of being labeled racist. This is coming from friends I know who are in corporate.

Not for me, having been homeless here in the U.S. due to lack of economic opportunities. I went to good schools, everything. They just want even the smartest people to be nothing but slaves here. Its bizarre.

Anyway, I tried to do this same thing at my local grocery store when I was homeless but I got caught by a security guard.

@Zeus Why is wage theft not actual theft? It is and it is a far larger problem. It is also literally criminal, it's just not enforced because the perpetrators are rich and it happens on such a wide scale, particularly to the most vulnerable workers.

Yet society is falling apart because this guy is stealing from Walgreens. You've been misdirected and bamboozled about what the big problems are.
