To my knowledge, "soft" cider never really took off in the UK, plus hard cider's popularity in the UK has been relatively constant, as opposed to all but disappearing in the US during prohibition (cider had been the drink of choice before then, but most cider orchards were destroyed, then when prohibition was lifted, it was a lot easier to get beer production back up and running than to regrow thousands of trees, so beer took over that market). --- This is my signature.
