You can tell the audience doesn't know how to respond, it's still somewhat counter-narrative, but he's talking too much sense.

And that hate is still justified.

There is a huge difference between it being possible and it being insisted on to remove blame from the US government's crappy response. Even if it was a biological attack aimed at the US directly the way he handled it was very very poor.

And it wasn't a direct attack.

They didn't want the Covid Relief, but they for sure want the investigation into the origins of Covid.

You know it was all a little tongue-in-cheek right Joe?

Obviously it was being studied in a Wuhan lab. He's not saying it was literally created BY a team of scientists in a lab. They discovered it, were studying it, and bungled it.

Joe's been running victory laps for weeks because "the possibility of a lab leak has been proven correct", which seems to destroy the meaning of "possibility", "proven" and "correct".

I looked at the facts and said "based on the information available the lab leak hypothesis is a valid hypothesis."

And up until very recently you and people like you said "no, it is impossible, and anybody who thinks it's possible is crackpot and should be censored"

Between the two of us, I was saying something true, and you were saying something false. It's not my fault the other side was so stupid as to insist the theory was impossible despite all the evidence pointing the other direction. Maybe they should learn for next time not to "debunk as false" something that is perfectly possible and has compelling evidence.

Good comedians make arguments through comedy. He broke through the counter-narrative so well because he knows on some base level any sensible person can see that it's not a crackpot conspiracy theory. And it gets even more compelling when you look at the evidence.

Obviously it was being studied in a Wuhan lab. He's not saying it was literally created BY a team of scientists in a lab. They discovered it, were studying it, and bungled it.

It's worth pointing out that your "obviously" wouldn't have existed 2 weeks ago, despite the facts on the ground not changing and just public opinion shifting. It's worth paying attention to who is right about things before the mainstream acknowledges they are right.

But, secondly what you are saying isn't exactly true, they didn't "discover it", Coronavirus is well known. This is a novel strain of something we've had/known about for a while. What they do in these labs is use serial passaging to alter the virus, the end goal being to see how it behaves under different contexts. Gain-of-function (GOF) research involves experimentation that aims or is expected to increase the transmissibility and/or virulence of pathogens.

So to put it in a metaphor: Let's say you had a group of people who were worried about vicious dog attacks, and so they thought the best way to protect society from vicious dog attacks was to take some existing vicious dogs and study them. But imagine that these dogs they took don't usually attack humans and when they do they aren't that aggressive, so imagine the lab did "gain of function" training on the dogs, to train the dogs to be more likely to attack humans or animals like humans. The lab is working with good intentions, they want to see how dogs like the vicious dogs they are training in the lab are likely to behave if they ever do get the taste for humans. The goal of their research is to know how best to stop/prevent the vicious dog attacks on humans if similar vicious dog attacks ever come in from the wild.

But then the lab fucks up and the dogs get loose into the public. Did the lab "create" the dogs? No. But to say they "discovered" them only is also a misrepresentation.

If they were just investigating viruses it would be called "research" and not "gain of function research". The gain of function means they are using serial passaging in a lab to allow the virus to mutate itself in meaningful and significant ways. Ways that likely made it more transmissible or more virulent.

The joke is "stop with the stuffy faux-logic and listen to your obvious intuition", he's doing a bit for comedic effect but he's on the side that it seems to have come from a lab, or at least he thinks that's the most obvious answer.

I said was the joke angle.

I love logic. But as we've seen anybody who is concerned with logic and critical thinking understood the lab leak was plausible a long time ago. The people remaining aren't persuaded by data but by narrative, so Stewart adeptly framed the narrative is such a way to get through to those people.

Those people you don't convince their minds but their gut and their narrative. If you are in a room laughing with others at how yeah it does feel fishy, all of the sudden you realize that this opinion you didn't think you were allowed to have is something many people around you feel.

His argument wasn't the best data driven argument for why people think it came from a lab, but it was one of the more effective arguments one could make to persuade those still in that bubble.

How did he frame the narrative? He didn't make an argument. He didn't say anything of value. Here's my response to you in a similar topic:
I agree with you that it is a reasonable hypothesis, but Jon gave no evidence to support the hypothesis other than the name of the lab which we already knew, and as Colbert pointed out, the lab is called that because of the number of novel coronaviruses that are found in the area...but, like I said, it's still a reasonable hypothesis, I just want more evidence...Also, Jon is still a funny motherfucker
