almost all the projects i work on are public information...you can go on certain websites and look them up (no, i wouldn't list them). they are paid for by your tax dollars and you are entitled to know what the projects are and what purpose they have (but the vast majority of the people don't care)

almost all the data behind the projects are all classified...they wouldn't be released to the public (note that some certain numbers can be requested but aren't published and a very very small amount are published, such as total project cost). from my understanding this is mostly done for a variety of reasons i don't want to get into, but here's a few: legal, to prevent scrutiny from people who have no idea what they are doing, to prevent foreign governments from stealing our methods and to prevent terrorist attacks. when i do data analysis, this is the data i work with. the data i create is also then classified.

top secret means only those with a certain clearance level knows the data. this data is of the utmost sensitivity and if released can have extreme ramifications. in my agency, only the absolute higher up of higher ups have any sort of clearance. so in my entire division...probably only the principal engineer has any sort of security clearance. and even then, i'm not certain there's really any top secret data that they are hiding
