Frankly, you're being a cheap bastard by getting a Quest 2 anyway. $300 for a VR headset is an absolute steal, and you can connect it to your PC to play even more VR games.

i like my quest 2. its great standalone, and i've loved using it with virtual desktop to stream games. it might not have the accuracy that index has, but i dont have the space to set one of those up anyway and i wasn't willing to drop a grand (or whatever the huge cost is) to get one plus all the needed accessories.

yeah, there'd be no reason for you to get one unless its breaking, and apparently valve has been pretty forgiving on repairs.

I actually wanted the Quest for the Venues app that lets you watch movies and concerts with other Quest users (I have a Quest 1, so I've experienced it, but hated keeping the quest 1 on my head because of the foam and lack of balance for the headset)

As much as I wanted that ONE app though, it wasn't worth spending $300 just to have it. The rest of the Quest "exclusives" can be played on any headset with a patch. AFAIK that venue app is the only thing I couldn't find anywhere else.

@nuclearratchet
I stream VR games, specifically Beat Saber, 5 nights a week. I'm involved in a few VR communities and I try to keep up with the news around it.

Most of the people I know who use Oculus devices are angry because of a recent change:
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/16/facebook-to-begin-testing-ads-inside-oculus-virtual-reality-headsets.html

You are also reqrequired to connect your Facebook account to your Quest 2.

Personally I use a Vive and want to upgrade to an Index. I'm not a fan of Facebook so I'd never get a Quest. But if you want a lower priced entry point, don't mind ads, and don't mind Facebook taking even more data about you, then the Quest is a solid VR headset.

Is streaming PC VR games onto the Quest 2 just as good as playing PC VR games with a PC VR headset? As in no lag or anything?

It depends on your connection speed if you're streaming. I've heard people say that they play with almost no latency what so ever, but other people say that they still prefer the tether. I think that's going to vary person to person.

My quest experienced latency problems with beat saber when not tethered to my pc BUT that could also be because the original quest has a low FPS. (72, to be exact, as opposed to 90 FPS on the Quest 2)

you can get pretty damn close. you might not be able to win beat saber extreme tournaments but beyond that the input lag is pretty negligible as long as you've got a good enough setup. i've had no issues with an older wifi5 router, optimally you want a wifi6 one though.

If you have a Link Cable you can turn your Quest 2 into a normal PC VR headset. It'll run off your computer's GPU and everything.

Yes, but if you want to mod Beat Saber and use your computer's GPU then you still have to use it iirc.

Ah, having an index and before that a HTC Cosmos Pro, I've never really tried to seriously use my quest for Beat Saber like I do with my tethered head sets (because I had better options). I can see how both running mods and streaming wirelessly could be an issue for Beat Saber, but probably not very many other games.

(However; for the TC, I haven't met anyone who has a VR headset that -didnt- take their Beat Saber seriously!!! I'm being 100% honest, Beat Saber kept me sane and healthy thru covid 2020, one of the best games for VR on the market with the way the devs keep supporting their game)

I mod it and play it nightly but I'm not into ranked or anything like that. But I think I'm an outlier here and in general I agree with everything you said.

Getting back to mods for Beat Saber, I believe mods like Noodle can't run on Quest 2 currently without the link cable and steam version.

Outside of Beat Saber, the Quest 2 is fine for most VR games. If you want a causal headset to play Bone Works and Super Hot and things like that then the Quest works well. Just be aware you may soon see ads and you have to connect it to Facebook.

Hell, I may STILL have to end up buying a Quest 2 if Oculus ever gets cocky enough to feel that they don't need Steam's (meager) VR population anymore for their games and just cuts off cross platform support.

I have hard enough time playing online games with people in VR because of lack of people (even pavlov has this issue, despite it being the most popular online steam game on VR)

So far, after like two hours of playing:
  • The novelty of VR wears off pretty quickly. After like 20 minutes, meh.
  • Beat Saber seems overrated. Spent $30 on this and none of these songs are mainstream. Its fun, but not $30 fun to be honest.
  • Vader Immortal Episode 1 is pretty good! Those ladders are awesome lol.
What other games are there?

The Walking Dead game is fun for a while but I can never see myself beating it. The environments are atrocious imo and the graphics hurt my eyes so I can only play for maybe 20 minutes at a time lol but that's just a personal thing. There might be a demo I don't remember. Give it a shot. People praise the shit out of it.

Waltz of the Wizards is pretty cool. It's more like a really extended tech demo than a full game. Has hand tracking. I received it for free somehow.

That Tetris game is fun.

Pistol Whip is a more fun rhythm game than Beat Saber imo.

lol, nobody plays the core songs after they learn the game. The only thing you did was slowly slash at a few blocks before you called it a day XDXDXD

Maybe you might want to hang in there until you learned the game before you say it's "meh". Beat Saber is not only damned hard, but it's rewarding for those that are patient enough to learn how to play. If you're not at LEAST on Expert (which you will be once you finish the "campaign") then you won't enjoy ANY of the DLC. The DLC is where this game *shines*. Not only are the custom songs you download for free pretty good but the beat maps for the paid DLCs are amazing and will (with time) teach you how to play on expert+.

Pistol whip on the other hand is fucking atrocious. That game will put you through the ringer for 5 straight minutes and if you fail at any point, you have to restart that physical torture over again.

I've only beaten 1 song on that game. if you are not in the best of shape, you will not enjoy this game, nor will you beat it. It is fun, but it's also a waste of money if you can't play it. Beat saber is playable by anyone who can finish the campaign and learn the moves that they show you (to ease you into expert settings)

Also: I want to add that the novelty of VR wore off for ME after about 30 minutes as well. The issue for me was that the Quest 1 just wasn't that comfortable to wear long term, beat saber also had me only playing on hard which was boring, and after plunging an additional $400 on VR games, none of them played or felt fun.

After having VR for a full year and fully upgrading to an Index however; I fully enjoy my experience now. There are no real game sellers for VR beyond Half Life Alyx and Beat Saber really. You have to find the diamonds in the rough. Give Star Wars Squadrons a try if you enjoyed the Vader game, you'll need an xbox controller to play it though (doesn't support oculus controls). Another great game for you might be No Man's Sky for VR, another great game made with VR in mind.

You're missing the point. The base game was to learn how to play the game. There are no licensed songs in the base game. And nobody told you that you had to spend money, we all mentioned that most people use the free downloadable custom songs. But you're choosing to ignore that because you're fixated on my flexing pockets.

I mean youre right though. I did play two songs up to Expert (where I failed miserably; difficulty jump from hard to expert is pretty big), then called it a day.

Yeah, the final 1/3 Top segment of the campaign addresses what you need to do to pass those stages. When you pass those without failing, you'll have more fun with with the game. Easy to learn; hard to master.

Also: I've been playing for nearly a full year and I struggle still with Expert level songs. My wife, on the other hand, is some where between Expert and Expert+ now after only a year of playing. It doesn't take much time at ALL to start playing on expert but mastering expert will take up most of your game time. You should be playing on expert setting with just a few hours of taking it easy and learning the ropes. Some of the original songs are ACTUALLY kind of catchy once you give them a chance, but after you start purchasing DLC---you probably won't be going back to the vanilla content any longer. You'll be playing the songs that interest YOU.

It's just a program that organizes your downloaded custom songs and yes, they are pre-modded, you don't have to make the blocks. It's very similar to the mod manager for many games like minecraft or skyrim.

I always feel like I'm the only person who plays Beat Saber mostly unmodded and has a blast. I have mods, I have custom songs, and I rarely play them. Whenever I'm on Beatsaver I wade through the hundreds of anime songs to find maybe 1 song that's interesting and then I look at the preview and it's just a really boring map, usually just filled with regular up/down blocks and nothing interesting. Like the video posted earlier, great environment, and I downloaded it just for that, but that map is extremely easy and boring. Although that might be the point because I find light maps are usually easy so you can appreciate the light show. I also don't understand the complaints about the "bad" the base songs (outside of OST 1 and 2) and the DLC are because they are mapped fine to great and often have interesting and fun patterns.

As for this topic, if you have gamepass for PC you can get some "free" VR games off of there, although with the Quest 2 you'll need to do some work, something about side loading an apk. I currently have Microsoft Flight Sim, Star Wars Squadrons, and Tetris Effect from Gamepass, and the others are No Man's Sky, Subnautica, and ARK (I heard that one is bad though). I forgot about Subnautica so I'm downloading it right now, will check back tomorrow.
