The book had some odd elements to it, and was missing some of the things that made the movie so damn good. Book was still good though!

Should mention I'm referring to the American remake, I haven't seen the Japanese one yet, I its sequels. Do the sequels have anything to do with the book sequels?

Here, I'll throw a few of the batshit plot points at you to get attention

in the book, Sadako is not a ghost. Instead, her hate at the world combined with the smallpox given to her when she was raped to make the vhs virus

oneof the main characters is a confessed serial rapist, only for it to be revealed at the end that he died a Virginia

Sadako had a rare syndrome that had her geow testicle, which made her look weirdly beautiful

Then what youve read is only through the lens of whoever translated it.

Imagine pulling Shakespeare out of old English

While true, it's not the writing that made it worse, it's actual story elements that wouldn't get affected nearly as much by translation.

Why?
From my recollection, the weird circle imagery they insert everywhere (because it's called 'Ring' so it has to have circles!), the non-scary decayed face make up, the silly video effect on the ghost, and how the boy is treated as an accomplice to self-preserving murder like a villain rather than a kid and just focusing on the emotional state of the mother.

Also I just don't feel any resonance with the side characters, mainly Brian Cox.

To be fair, the circle imagery does tie well into the story very well, its not just random imagery. It's pulled from the book.
