With Covid vaccination penetration in the US likely to fall short of Joe Bidens 70% by Fourth of July target, pandemic analysts are warning that vaccine incentives are losing traction and that two Americas may emerge as the aggressive Delta variant becomes the dominant US strain. Efforts to boost vaccination rates have come through a variety of incentives, from free hamburgers to free beer, college scholarships and even million-dollar lottery prizes. But of the efforts to entice people to get their shots have lost their initial impact, or failed to land effectively at all. Its just not working, Irwin Redlener at the Pandemic Resource and Response Initiative at Columbia University, told Politico. People arent buying it. The incentives dont seem to be working whether its a doughnut, a car or a million dollars. In Ohio, a program offering five adults the chance to win $1m boosted vaccination rates 40% for over a week. A month later, the rate had dropped to below what it had been before the incentive was introduced, Politico found. Oregon followed Ohios cash-prize lead but saw a less dramatic uptick. Preliminary data from a similar lottery in North Carolina, launched last week, suggests the incentive is also not boosting vaccination rates there.

Separately, pandemic researchers are warning that a picture of two Americas is emerging the vaccinated and unvaccinated that in many ways might reflect red state and blue state political divides. Only 52% of Republicans said they were partially or fully vaccinated, and 29% said they have no intention of getting a vaccine, according to a CBS News/YouGov poll. 77% of Democrats said they were already vaccinated, with just 5% responding that were resisting the vaccine. I call it two Covid nations, Peter Hotez, a vaccine researcher at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, told BuzzFeed News. Bette Korber, a computational biologist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, said she expected variant Delta to become the most common variant in the US within weeks. Its really moving quickly, Korber told Buzzfeed. Biden said in remarks from the White House, saying that the Delta variant leaves unvaccinated people even more vulnerable than they were a month ago. Were heading into, God willing, the summer of joy, the summer of freedom, Biden said. On July 4, we are going to celebrate our independence from the virus as we celebrate our independence of our nation. We want everyone to be able to do that.

So glad im vaccinated so even though I live in area where 35% got two doses I will be safe.

Only way to beat this is to make vaccines mandatory (besides those allergic and such, obviously) to participate in society. Nobody wants to make that decision nor enforce it though.

I never really got the im vaccinated who cares argument. It got used with India and is now being used with certain parts of the US. Isnt the whole reason the Delta variant happened because of unvaccinated people in India? Maybe Im thinking too far ahead but if not enough people are vaccinated in US or another country in world couldnt that create a mutation worse than the Delta one?

Yeah, eventually this will happen. That's why it's so important to keep restrictions/mask use until it's truly safe to remove them.

That's on the parents. If you can't home school, then your child is going to need to attend a federal/state funded school and you will have to get them vaccinated. If your child's education suffers from your personal decision, then accept that personal responsiblity of hindering your child's education. Actions should have consequences as unfortunate as they are. I'm still against a mandatory forced vaccination.

well if you're ok with that then what's your thought on "public spaces" like parks or hell just sidewalks? those are government funded after all.

Home schooling isn't inherently going to give a kid a better education than public schooling. Sure, public school education isn't great in most areas, but let's not pretend there aren't many parents home schooling their kids who have no business doing so.

I got my shots practically as soon as I could get them, and have been urging reluctant friends to do the same. There's some seasonality to COVID, it seems, so I suspect it will be mostly fine until October or so. That's when Delta(or god knows what other variant) will really take off, if it's going to. We all must all do our part to keep it at bay.

The goverment has no gatekeeping laws on who can enter these areas outside of people who have violated park rules. And if they did, that would open up a whole new beast/can of worms.

so its based off of park rules? well what if all public parks everywhere declared that for the safety of kids too young or people too sick to get vaccinated, all people of age and able body that wish to enter the park must be vaccinated first? how is that any different then a public school requiring it for admittance?

No offense to you personally, but I think one of the biggest reasons people are resisting the vaccine is because they aren't being made aware (or aren't taking it upon themselves to learn) of the huge potential for long-lasting - potentially lifelong - side effects; they're only worried about the mortality rate, if that. I've known about the possibility of ED (in addition to Covid's other frightening complications) for at least the past six months, possibly longer, and have heard of it from several sources; and let's be perfectly honest, I get a large portion of my news from this very board.

That's why I said 'no offense to you personally;' I didn't know your stance on things and did not assume one way or the other. My point was that a lot more people might get shocked into action as far as getting vaccinated if the ED complications were more widely known.

That's my fault, and I apologize profusely; upon rereading my post I neglected to specifically say 'side effects of Covid,' and can see how my post would have incorrectly inferred that it was a side effect of the vaccine.
