Usually some world conqueror like Napoleon or a Hitler that capture a lot of territory rapidly, but don't know how to stop, end up overextended and eating imprisonment or a bullet to the head for thier failure to know thier limits. Although, ambition is probably less of an issue for peasants like us though. You may push to far past your abilities, but you usually can fall back to what you are doing previously if that didn't work. In general, ambition is probably "less cringe" than a lack of ambition.
