It's not so complex, when you get turned on it stimulates a nerve that relaxes the muscle "gates" to the sponge, and blood flows in

And traps the blood inside the penis to maintain rigidness. However if you're bitten by a Brazilian Wandering Spider then the "gate" can't open so your penis gets filled with blood but it can't return to the body. Unless you seek medical attention fast you risk losing your friend (this is also the same reason why you need to seek medical attention incase Viagra gives you over 4 hours erection).
