i did this for years. most people didn't tip. most tips were $1 (on an average $25 sale). it still made an 8 hour shift pay like a 10+ hour shift, so no complaints.

tips were definitely better in the rain, and a lot better in the snow. Christmas week was usually more in tips than the paycheck.

i viewed them as a bonus. i didn't feel wronged unless i was asked to do extra stuff (oil, tires), and even then i'm not the kind to let a few bucks bother me.

In Michigan and can confirm thos isn't a thing anywhere I've been. I feel like there was a moment businesses tried it, but then they immediately stopped.

It is illegal to pump your own gas in New Jersey and parts of Oregon.

When I was a kid I also remember full service vs self service gas stations, but haven't seen one in years.
