Male and Female actor suggests they both identify as men. Best male/female performer would leave gender out of it entirely and differentiate solely by biological sex.

Ehhh I get what you're saying, but that's like saying male and female doctor suggests they both identify as men. Or male/female chancellor, supervisor, ambassador, etc. The only reason you associate "actor" with male is because there's an unnecessarily gendered word created for women alongside it.

also, performer could be n actor, but it could also be a musician, or a comedian, etc

Correct, actor and actress.

It's not like that at all. Quite the opposite of that. What's the female gendered word for doctor? Doctress...?

I think the industry that the award is from would differentiate the type of performer. Comedian and Musician are already suitable words to associate with the specific industry. If more clarification is needed they can add "in film" "on stage", ect... to describe the type of performance.

The idea here is pretty obviously to do away with gendering actors' job title.

Getting rid of the gendered categories would reduce the overall number of winners, and make the award even more political.

It would make things simpler, but there's probably some logistical issue besides it? idk, even if you got rid of the gendered title, the gendered categories might remain. What they could do is establish multiple categories for "best actor" for inclusion, then have a best overall where the winners of those categories go up against each other... although I guess that'd just create more problems because any time a white person won, there would be controversial despite the fact there are far more white actors (because the US is majority white) so statistically you are more likely to get more talented white actors.

Obviously, any time you try to stop using a commonly-used word, it'll take some time to get people on board with that. It certainly wouldn't work overnight. The Oscars being as high-profile as they are, though, would be a decent place to start trying to effect that cultural shift.

It should just be named to human actor. Then we can have more categories like best demon actor or best goldfish actor. The important stuff.

And then when men win most of the time people will complain and either ramp up giving out token awards or say they women should have their own category so they don't have to share the spotlight with men.

I mean, if I were creating new awards today I would probably tie them to roles. Maybe "Lead" and "Supporting", although those have always been rather confusing. "Best Superhero"? "Best love interest"? "Best horror victim"?

That said, getting rid of the "gendered" roles now with their long history would just make the Oscars even more irrelevant than they already are.

halving the awards created more competition, increasing movie quality and and movie-making innovation.

seems like a good thing tbh

Best goldfish actor was Steve the goldfish, whose most notable role was as the goldfish who flaps around on the bathroom floor in the opening minutes of Alex Proyas' Dark City (1998). Apparently he trained for weeks for just that one shot, spending a few seconds at a time out of his bowl. I don't think he did a lot of work after Dark City though.
