I think...

Here are 2 insects that people surprisingly mix up..at least when they are adult sizes.

Moths tend to be everywhere around lights and in houses whereas butterflies are on flowers and stay outside...

But can you tell the difference in their adult phases?

You know this could have been difficult, but the second one is just blatantly a moth.

The top one is a butterfly, and the bottom one is a moth. Butterflies are usually more colorful, with thin antennae and smooth bodies while moths are usually more dull, with leaf-shaped antennae and furry bodies.

The coloration on the bottom definitely looks more like a moth, but I was wondering if it was a trick question given the wings until Helly ID'd the species. I guess in hindsight I should have thought the protrusions on the head were antennae, which is another obvious tell.

The first one appears to be a swallowtail, I think.

But in any case, it's body is slender, the antennae are thin, and the photo is obviously taken in the daytime. Moths usually have fat bodies and feathery antennae, and most are nocturnal.
