What makes you think that the baristas are acting unprovoked? Someone has to start the chain and in working in food service for almost 10 years, my educated guess is that the customer starts it.

Like if I was in that situation as a barista who did that, I wouldnt do that to just random customers. Itd be ones who came in being dicks. And thats not saying Id do that.

Normally for dick customers I just dont bend over and do whatever to make them happy. If you come in asking for something we generally dont do, if youre nice about it, Ill probably do it. If youre abrasive about it, I probably wont.

In most situations I've seen in videos or wherever the escalation of situations is usually the lack of any sort of basic problem solving:

ie a customer gives an attitude

the employee gives one back

that is a basic NO in how to handle your job, the whole situation would've been over in three seconds if the employee would've shut the fuck up and kept on, but they expected that somehow this stranger that they have never met before that would've left anyways is going to change their life from that one interaction and never take it out on an employee ever again

the second scenario is the manager problem

ie a customer asks for a manager

employee does NOT get them a manager and or says I am the manager

my guy, like wtf does that have to do with you at all - you have an opportunity to pass on the situation to someone else and either:

a) take another customer in the meantime

b) wait around and do nothing (which is what the employee wants to do anyways) while the manager comes over

c) apologize and assure that they will be taken care of thus getting them off your back

If you're telling me a group of people hopped up on this idea that at any moment in time a Karen is going to come into their store or a group of people who have already dealt with Karen's are happy to be in a position where they could relive this negative experience -- who do you honestly think is the person already going out of their way to look for problems? Never mind people who fuel this idea in their head that suddenly an employee is ALWAYS in the right or that the work they do is so hard that they believe that story themselves when they could just reaffirm themselves instead to just deal with it.

Don't even get me started on bartending and serving - that was high school 2.0 and the amount of idiocy you could conceivably encounter is second to none. I dealt with people in the same shifts as me who would get discouraged they got tipped 0 and let that rule over them the rest of the shift to the point they'd really come and ask me 'why didn't they leave me tip'

it's cause you're a miserable shithead who decided to walk around miserable the entire shift and thought nobody would notice >_>

I'm not saying you have to be happy taking shit from others, but my God just get on already and do your damn job cause your boss doesn't care, your mom doesn't care, your friend doesn't care, I don't care, the person behind me doesn't care, your cousins don't care, those people on Facebook who say they care don't actually care, and the homeless definitely don't care

Maybe it's because I have a 10/10 personality working with people and pass all speech checks in life because I give an actual damn people are upset at a place of business (or simply that they are upset PERIOD) or am just curious as to what their motivations are to pass the time at work that I just refuse to have any sympathy for those who really go out of their way to bring it on themselves.

I don't consider actual Karen's scenarios that are needless to be the fault of an employee, of course not. I do consider their ability to defuse a situation thereafter and the resulting mess that ensues to be the fault of that person if they have no points alotted to CHR or WIS. That is simply foolish to dump all points into INT with the hopes their internalized logic gets them out of scenarios that do not require INT checks and then complain the game sucks because they failed those rolls

...You can always y'know - punch that customer if you don't really like them I guess

I am a call center supervisor for a bank assisting people with their unemployment debit cards from the bank side and the number of abusive callers we get is insane. Everything from racial slurs to outright masturbating on the phone with our people...

A lawyer could probably get Starbucks successfully sued for millions of dollars if they did a big case representing all the "rude customers"
