If you go through this exit, you unlock that level. If you go through that exit, you unlock this level. If you find the secret exit on the level tucked away in the far right corner of the map, you unlock a level you never knew existed.

Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong Country 2 have better overall level design, but they're linear. There's nothing to really compare to the experience of unlocking levels that weren't originally present on the map or choosing your own pathway.

There are much more nonlinear games if you think that's special.

You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.

Donut assume that SMW was the only one to implement that.

What other games have hidden levels and an evolving map screen?

It also tells you which levels have more than one exit which is so nice.

A great feature could have been horrible if they made you search blindly through every level to find another exit

That would've been irritating.

That's one I found after about 20 years. You need to go back with a Blue Yoshi and there's only one shell in the entire level to let you fly and reach it.

The most recent secret, one I only read about online, was Big Boo lowering his hands over his eyes if you stare at him for 16 seconds.

I was always on the fence about whether I liked SMW or SM3 better, but these days I am firmly in team SMW

Lemme ask yall this. Would SMB3 be as good or be even better if they let you back track?

Yeah I honestly don't see much benefit to closing off levels after you've finished them
