I just finished up the section with Mordin curing the Genophage.

Yeah, the last 45 minutes of the game were not ideal. I will 100% admit to that. It does not negate how amazing the entire trilogy is, nor how good Mass Effect 3 is up to that point.

The payoff is in the stories told within the game itself. The "conclusion" for a story that involves powers of such universal proportions was never going to be what everyone wanted. Would it have been any better if the Crucible just injected them all with a virus? I think it could have been much better but it just does not negate the rest of a great game.

I even liked the ending

the only parts I didn't like were: the one space ninja guy and the rest of the space ninjas you fought, and the final battle on earth was a bit dragged out, iirc, especially with those banshee(?) enemies

Mass effect 3 is just broken on half the classes. In ME2 Vanguard is an interesting class where you have to charge carefully and shotgun people in the ass. In ME3 you can unequip all your weapons and use alternative between using nova--charge and you are fully invincible for the rest of the entire game. Combat is now literally just spamming 2 buttons back and forth mindlessly.

I'd even say that with Leviathan and the Extended Cut DLC installed, the ending ranges from fine to decent.

You aren't, but the broken rpg mechanics that cause that issue make the game less fun to begin with. A lot of players like myself always plays games on the hardest settings and enjoy experimenting and optimizing builds. Optimizing builds should be challenging and require creativity, not just unequipping all but your main gun and getting +-200% CDR

The "if you ignore the ending..." argument is lame. If the entire series builds towards a bullshit ending, then it retroactively makes the series bullshit. Because that ending was all it was building to.

My favorite part is how Shep's interesting powers are completely nerfed in the single player mode to conform with multiplayer in the third game of a single player RPG trilogy. Or how you have fewer selectable squadmates and the game parades you around to the unselectable ones to show that they're in the game, but fuck you not really. Or how the missions that aren't the good ones, which are damned good and some of the best in the series, are random spawns on multiplayer maps done more lazily than playing with fucking bots in Unreal Tournament.

Fuck Mass Effect 3. The lazy ending stole the shit spotlight, but it's far from the only way the game is a disappointment of Daikatana proportions.

About half of the SP story is really great.

A lot of it sucks though-- not just the ending. Kai Lame is a terribly shitty anime reject-- whoever decided to put a cyborg ninja douchebag in Mass Effect should be beaten. Retconning Cerberus from being a somewhat small terrorist organization that lost most of its forces in ME2 to becoming an enormous military force was also awful.
