Spoilers

Probably one of my favorite games ever and the first thing I overpayed for at $80 back in 2008.

What are you into?

The most unique thing upfront is that you control where towns and cities spawn on the world map. This determines enemy levels, which determine drop rates for items and appearance rates for Beast Eggs (for monster raising!) or Essence Hunting (magic is useless. Use these for crafting and enchanting armor/weapons

The combat is kinda basic with a few cool things that the average player is probably never going to discover. The item management is very very very complex with countless variables and super specific, long recipes that can give you AMAZING buffs like sharing EXP with your entire party but it doesnt tell you that you now have this ability, nor does the game ever imply at any point that armor abilities exist.

the writing is pretty sloppy too. This is basically a game where you just travel around and talk to people and occasionally theyll give you a quest. Lots of little fun stories to follow, and basically every quest is unique! The only fetch quest is the one where the point is to be an annoying fetch quest. Beware that half the quests are very annoying to complete, and a bunch wont even activate unless their towns mana levels (another thing the game doesnt explain) are high enough. So you cant do everything without very calculated map placements. Yes its very annoying.

If you do some quests in the wrong order, you can fuck over entirely unrelated quests. This is worse than Tales of Vesperia.

But the game is a visual FEAST. Just a beautiful game and I wish others followed suit. Theres a lot to this game. Its a little bit too complex for its own good, but I really believe that it can serve as a really solid foundation for a much better game.

If you play this and want to not waste your time talking to everyone and going everywhere back and forth on seemingly fruitless searches, use a guide. I can link one of you want.

Also the Jumi storyline is great and basically everyone agrees. Its getting an anime adaptation soon too.

God, Im probably making this game sound AWFUL. Im just pointing out the big divisive stuff, I swear!

oh! I forgot that a whole lot of the NPCs are totally unique. You have some basic stuff, like students in uniform that are generic (but have unique dialogue if you talk to them with certain party members), but for the most part, youre gonna get really varied designs for the cast.

Thats why you let Bud fester in the corner as he rots from his disease until youre sure youre free to take the quest!

You should always do it before Cosmo anyway. Thats another point where you should just let Elazul loiter outside your house for a bit until youre sure youre ready. Its a pretty big story sequence from then on too, so it only feels right to do it all in a row.
