It really is cringe to think that the purge would be a good idea at all

The concept falls just fucking dissolves at the slightest bit of scrutiny. Are you really gonna make shit like rape and pedophilia legal for a day? And are victims of violence or their loved ones just supposed to forget about everything the next day? What about all the crazy shit people would do that would create lasting problems after the purge was over?

It's a dystopian film. Society is already shit.

Thats a fair point but from what Ive seen of the films even, The Purge clearly does not work and has a terrible effect on the world.

Yeah that's my point. They're executed poorly. They're heavy-handed and they can't figure out what type of movie they want to be. A better script and better director could take them in interesting directions.

As I understand it all the Purge movies were low budget yet extremely profitable which is why they keep making them.

So yeah, the writing of the movies is a complete waste of the concept, as the movies are just every character being unbelievable morons so bad stuff can happen, but they keep making money despite how stupid they are, so they keep making them the same.

Rather than actually explore the concept of a day without laws properly, all anyone in the purge movies want to do is go on murder sprees for no real reason other than because they are idiots, which is essentially high risk no reward.

The Purge series is a wish fulfillment fantasy marketed as a horror. Everyone Ive met who genuinely enjoys the series is like a little too into the idea of an actual purge.

Well, the Rick and Morty purge episode essentially just a play on the movies, but more interesting since Rick and Morty are more interesting characters, someone in the episode even claims the purge is a scheme by the elites (like is the case with the movies), but after killing the elites it doesn't change that the people of that world are morons that found killing sprees as a method of stress relief acceptable to begin with, so they do it again anyway.

wtf?

How is it a great concept? It's one of those things you hear and just go "That is dumb as fuck" and don't even give it a second thought. There is no scenario where the core idea makes sense on any level. It's just one of those stupid goreography films isn't it?

It doesn't have to be a stupid gorefest.

See, I think they could actually do a pretty interesting twist on their formula with that. Imagine a movie where someone's kid got stuck over at a friend's house during the purge, and it turns out they got abused while the laws were suspended. So then we fast-forward to the next purge, and instead of hiding, the kid's parents decide to go out and get their revenge. It's a race against the clock to break in and kill those bastards while they legally can. It would be a neat way of showing why the purge exists. Not only that, they have to defend themselves against other purgers who are out doing their own things.
