The Los Angeles City Council passed a sweeping anti-camping measure Thursday to remove widespread homeless encampments that have become an eyesore across the city. The measure was billed as a compassionate approach to get people off streets and restore access to public spaces in the city with nations second-largest homeless population, though critics said it would criminalize the problem. I cant think of any reason why we would not unite in support of what the people of Los Angeles want us to do, said Councilman Paul Krekorian, coauthor of the measure. Restore order to our streets, while also uplifting and providing services to those in need. Among other limits, the ordinance that passed 13-2 would ban sitting, lying, sleeping or storing personal property that blocks sidewalks, streets and bike lanes or near driveways, fire hydrants, schools, day care centers, libraries, homeless shelters and parks. It wouldnt be enforced in some locations until someone has turned down an offer of shelter and the council has passed a resolution placing that space off-limits, posting signs and giving two weeks notice. It could be enforced immediately if a person or tent is blocking handicap access guaranteed under the Americans with Disabilities Act or placing themselves or others in danger such as blocking a loading dock.

Yay about time they took the homeless and put them somewhere else.

Where's the uplift here? There might be uplifting taking place at some point, but this is just punishing/restricting people. And the obvious help never seems to really materialize.

Looks like LA's wealthy finally complained enough is what I would chalk that up to. The wealthy in San Fran, comparatively, probably never even go into the city anymore.

I don't know about homeless shelters and parks but homeless people *should* be banned from making camps in those other places.

Venice Beach was becoming the next Skid Row. They were finding dead people in tents there. Something has to be done.

Ironically enough, California embodies capitalism more than any other state. We got hordes of homeless people everywhere along with tons of rich 90210 folks.

Have there been any measures to create like designated homeless campgrounds before? Feels like it would be the best mid-point. You provide set spaces in which they can set up, provide basic amenities like toilets, get to control where they stay, and you can likely gather those who would refuse proper housing. It could have a massive host of potential issues, but don't know if has been tried or not.

Most attempts are usually killed by city councils. NIMBY runs rampant here.

Reminds me off one city in Orange County. The council wanted to create a multi unit homeless shelter but it was killed because residents didn't want homeless in the city.

Homelessness is a problem that will never be resolved in this country.

Unless they're providing housing without conditions, this is unconstitutional and nothing will change.

Not just the homeless. They're knowingly throwing away millions because it will get people to be a bit quieter about it, fully knowing this will be useless and found unconstitutional.

Unconstitutional you say? Lmao I dont think so bud. You cant just put a tent somewhere and say, I live here now, and the constitution protects me.
Nor can you make living on the street illegal. Unless they provide unconditional housing for them, this is going nowhere.

NBC did a story awhile back talking about how California allocated $500 million to fight the homeless problem only to have nearly half of that going towards administrative costs. The rest of the funds housed the homeless, but didn't fix any problems as the homeless have only grew (up to 157,000+ homeless in California as of 2019).

Well they do have to pay people and consult with experts, it's not like everyone would be volunteering their time for no compensation. What do you expect the cost structure to be?

A lot of non profit organizations are similar and administration costs can be even higher to account for fund rising.

Living on the street isnt illegal. A city can absolutely say that camping is illegal inside the city except for certain places. When the camping ban was lifted in Austin, the homeless shelter was practically empty.
No, they actually can't. As they'll find out here.

Let the people in their ivory towers pretend like the homeless are all pure and innocent people that happened to get fucked over by capitalism. Fun fact: The homeless problem in China is so fucked that homeless people in China regularly kidnap babies and toddlers to use them as tools to assist them in panhandling. Sometimes they'll even use older children as panhandling slaves. Delightful stuff, no? But I guess they are just doing what they need to to survive ehh? The system is basically forcing them to kidnap children. Be real interesting if the US reaches that point.

Have you been living in a hole? Austin passed Prop B over a month ago to ban public camping. Theyve been ripping up tents already and clearing them out.

Im still seeing a bunch of them under bridges and downtown at night.
