As an aside, can we separate the Team from the Fans. Yes England got charged for 3 things. None of those things were done by The England Team. A subset of fans being complete nobs doesnt make the team an unsportsmanlike team.

Oh I really wish we all could, but both things unfortunately and definitely add up to England generally being viewed as the bad guy in the final.

Maybe it's also fueled by us basically being fan favorites since the Eriksen incident and generally being underdogs. Idk, but I've never seen more worldwide Danish support than this tournament and people tend to go hard against teams that win controversial matches against teams they're rooting for. It wouldn't have mattered if we had been crushed without any incidents, but I think it fuels the case here even if it's not the main reason.

I think that is fair, and while irrational, human nature is often quite irrational.

Had Denmark been on the other side of the bracket from England, I would have wanted them to meet in the finals. Cause god damn did that Danish spirit deserve to be there.

Yeah, most of this is super irrational. As a guy who's obviously very frustrated that we lost, everything is very easy:

Did Sterling dive? Yes
Was it a soft pen? Yes
But was it a fairly given pen? Yes
Could another referee not have blown the wristle? Yes
Would that have been fair? Yes
Does any of the last two questions actually matter? No
Is it fair UEFA opened cases for the three incidents? Yes
Does the cases have anything to do with the match result? No

So yeah, frustrating way to lose obviously but England ultimately won fair and square. We should just be proud that we played even with them and that our one goal was the better of the total three.

Hungary have to play 3 games without fans because of their racist and homophobic banners/behavior in the Euros. See, England aren't quite the worst fans!

Third place match in the Copa last night was a fun match with the winner at the last second of stoppage time. And playing for pride, there was a lot less of the theatrics you usually see in Copa. We didnt get the best announcers though

As an admittedly spiteful Scot who definitely has to restrain my anti-English instincts when tournaments roll around, I've actually been taken aback over the last few weeks by the extent to which this is not true. I've lived in Switzerland, Japan and now Denmark (what up ctes) in recent years, and the degree of anti-English sentiment during this competition from my friends all over has actually surprised me. My Danish friends here seemed solidly anti-England even before the events of the semi-final, citing things like Brexit and the political fallout, loutish English fan culture, and even Southgate's "boring" tactics. The semi-final didn't help, of course, but I'm certain that Italy would have had 90+% support here even if Denmark had lost earlier in the competition.

Honestly, it almost made me feel bad for them! This England team is endearing on a personal level in a way that past teams absolutely weren't, Southgate seems a lovely man (though those recent "invasion" comments were fairly awful) and they deserve to be in the final. But it really seems like England are in a perfect storm of unpopularity as a political and footballing nation, to the point that even my spiteful Scottish perspective doesn't feel like an outlier.

For real, I know it's weird but Eurovision is a good barometer of when we became just a deeply unpopular country worldwide. Followed Bush into a toxic war and then just got shittier and shittier. We won Eurovision in 99(?). Since 2003, we've been humiliated there.

Also social media helped increase global awareness of colonialism and such so that doesn't help either. And Brexit. And our idiotic PM. Etc etc

England line up is a bit worrying. Totally gutted for Saka to miss out because of an injury. He's looked so bright in every game he's played.

Argentina has basically always been a few key players, more than a full functioning squad like England has grown to be up to and especially during this tournament. Messi and Martinez in particular this time. Messi and Macherano for a decade. I don't think England started out better, but they have become it.

I enjoy teams most where no one stands out that much.

I mean if they all live up to their potential, Saka, Sancho, Foden and Bellingham should be regular starting players as the decade goes on. At the moment, England still has plenty of more experienced options to go with (Kane, Sterling, Maguire, etc) to start off. Chances are a couple of them might get subsituted late in the game (especially if England are about to lose anyway).

I also think England are in an really position right now where even when talent doesn't pan out, the clubs are churning out more exciting talent like a conveyor belt.

Ali/Loftus Cheek don't work out? Don't worry Mount is out there.
Trent breaking records for Liverpool but isn't available? England's got plenty of world class talent there.
Heck you look at England's lineup from 3 years ago that made the semis and you can just see how quickly young names got switched over for even better looking young names. It's amazing.
Also a sign that no one can hold on to their spot for a decade because there's new guys coming up.

Chelsea have 2-3 guys already that have been exciting scouts and Hudson Odoi already went from a promising emerging talent to onto the next guy.

Yeah, the team itself isn't bad outside of thugs like Kane or Maguire, and Pickford is just one of those people that really grates on you when you see him play, but most of the hate for England just has to do with fans and the general perception of the country and the media.
