Zelda should be about exploration and combat, since that's what adventure stories are built on, and that's what BOTW does best.

Botw still has "dungeons" they're just short and to the point. People complain they repeat things a lot, which is true. But so did the dungeons in the old games. I can't even count how many *shoot the hidden thing on the wall to reveal the key/open the door* instances there are

And the only games didn't even have good or clever puzzles. They were boring and basic as shit 95% of the time. At least in BOTW you can break them in 1000 stupid ways with the mechanics

"Most of the landscape is nothing." Most of the landscape in the old games was nothing. You interacted with so little of the old games in a meaningful way.

Zelda 1 had great exploration, it's just suoer cryptic by today's standards.

MM had a cool story so I can see that appeal. But not the gameplay.

WW was good outside the dungeons and triforce quest.

Other than that, fuck the old games

I wanted to like BotW but the weapons constantly breaking on me really ruins the game.

I like all the Zelda games I played aside from Adventure of Link. BotW was the worst-good one though imo. I like the dungeons in zelda, and the longer the better.

Botw is soo fun. My fave part was collecting the rupees in the rock climbing minigame. I did that for like 20 hours. I only played one other zelda game tho (wind waker) so dont know much about the rest of the franchise.

The formula started in OoT was a really great formula, is the thing.

I love BotW but I'd get why someone would miss the old way they made the series considering it's been like 15 years.

The set dungeons with set puzzles set up is good. The DBs are really the weakest part of the game. What would be the best if a mixture of the two, more established dungeons with their own interior puzzles with variable solutions and better dungeon specific gimmicks to mimic the whole obtain a new item and allow more progression system.

I definitely think BoTW has made it hard for me to go back and play any of the older games.

When it comes to the traditional Zelda formula, I prefer 2D Zelda. I think I just find the puzzles more interesting and the art much more appealing. By TP I also found the lack of VA off putting in 3D scenes.

Hopefully we get another 2D Zelda before the switch life span is up.

There are plenty of games that do the open world better this game just got hyped because it has a nice shiny legend of zelda theme.
While I can play dozens of other and better open world games there are very few legend of zelda type games being released these days.
I like exploring the smaller more refined worlds of the older zelda games where you can always find something new or see some place and wonder how you can get there over the vast mostly empty open world where I can just climb to get wherever I want.

This isn't really true lol

"Giant open world" is a big genre nowadays but I can't think of another game that is similar to BotW's approach

BOTW and Death Stranding are the only two games where I feel like traversing and exploring the open world is an integral part of the gameplay design and even both of those have drastically different interpretations of it.

They already did that with Skyward Sword.

BOTW is empty.

When you explore the world, the only things you will run into are a little temple dungeon thing, or a Korok Seed. There is nothing fun about that in terms of exploration. You're not gonna run into a cool side mission, a deep cavern of lore, etc. etc. It's all empty. The most interesting characters are dead already or largely absent, the villain is more or less disappointing (especially compared to how fleshed out he was in Windwaker, for example), and Zelda comes across as really whiny.

I really enjoy the gameplay sure, but the only things to do beyond wandering around is the 4 Beasts and they were disappointing to me personally.

link is taking care of Zelda and they hide for the night in a cave.
link gets morning wood and Zelda noticed and think he is being a horndog (he is not) and gets mad and runs away and a boboklin captures her

More games need to adopt Death Stranding movement philosophy tbh

I'd love something like an Elder Scrolls game but where I have to actually mind my surroundings instead of effortlessly gliding through water or crouch jumping everywhere

The combat in Breath of The Wild is absolute trash with the breaking weapons and only like 6 enemy types with no new movesets or anything in 90 percent of encounters. It's not the worst thing ever but I would never call it good, I avoid combat at all cost simply because I find it to either be annoying or a waste of time/resources to even attempt it.

My man. Give me a third person shooter with Death Stranding level movement options and I'm in heaven. Can you imagine how tense it would be having to constantly shift your weight to line up a sniper shot for a moving target trying to zig zag up the hill to get in position to get to you?
