For example, in Symphonia. There's a title that requires to start the peniultimate dungeon, but then immediately back out and leave. Warp to a completely different overworld map, go to your house and talk to a NPC. Afaik, there is zero hint or reason for you to do this unless you looked it up beforehand. If you wait until you beat the dungeon, you can't get it anymore and have to replay a 60 hour game and try again >_>

Vesperia also had really small windows for quests too (especially Estelle's backstory stuff). Do future Tales games fix this stuff or nah?

Agreed

I haven't played Xillia/2/Graces in a long time, but if memory serves, they at least had some kind of exclamation mark over their heads.

Vesperia also had the teeniest window to complete the little side mission which unlocked the EX dungeon that let you fight Kratos after beating the game

So they can sell guides to you, they just happen to be one of the worst offenders.

In Xillia 1 I only found out after the fight with Alvin that there's an easily missable side quest where his mom dies and that's part of the reason he goes a bit crazy for a while and I was really annoyed when I found out about that. Shouldn't have been a fucking side quest.

These games are just ok. Lots of hype but they were underwhelming to me.

I prefer the early 2d ones: phantasia/destiny.

Symphonia is still a top 10 game for me and a lot of fun. But those sidequest windows are so stupid >_>

Growlanser 4 be like "oh, you didn't backtrack through 4 dungeons to get back to your vacation place before moving forward and doing the plot stuff? Whoops you just missed a furlough and that's the cut off to unlock the event needed for x character to learn this skill/ mandatory scene for y endings/ can't get z character to join you party because now they'll die" stuff. At least the tales of series has dropped titles by and large, besides for outfits and even then... But yeah, missing out on certain weapons and thus skills in vesperia was depressing.

Tales of the Abyss has a sidequest that requires you fly to the other side of the map when you have absolutely no reason to 5 times within extremely specific windows and it's also only available on a second playthrough

It's mostly old school ones that did. With vesperia being one of the last to my knowledge. And developers started to cut that shit out in general because is was stupid and unnecessary as fuck.

The costume is the best one for Guy in the entire game, at least.

It's sort of in a weird spot for me, since I love hidden backtrack sidequests, but hate missables.

True! Guy easily has the best selection of costumes, too.

modern tales games dont go as crazy with the sidequests it seems
a lot of the times your reward for doing those crazy long sidequests was a different costume
but now instead of earning costumes in game they just release costumes as overpriced DLC

Oh man, Tales of the Abyss. I love ya, but you do some dumb shit.

You want Natalia to get Gallant Barrage? All you have to do is go to a completely unrelated area after Ashe and Luke fight. What's that, you went into the cave with Ashe? Too bad, you can't leave and you can no longer talk to the old man who teaches her that arte!

Getting Guy's weapon for Brilliant Overlord was also annoying iirc. No in game clue where you had to backtrack and if you miss one prompt, you'll never get it.

Star Ocean 2 did it worse. If you want to do the bonus dungeon you have to get all the way to the last save point before the final boss, then turn around and exit a 12 floor tower and get sent back to the first planet.

the timing to do each sidequest is so strict and weird that you basically need to play them with a guide if you dont want to miss anything

There's actually a bunch of sidequests in Symphonia that only open up after you view that final scene. The last layer doesn't activate until then. So it's more than just 1 title, it's at least 3
