Okay, so let's name some big ones.

Demon's Souls - Fresh coat of paint, which is wonderful, but it's almost 1 to 1 the same game with no improvements made to anything except engine and visuals. Well reviewed but I haven't been able to play yet so I'm withholding all judgement.

FF7R - Good gameplay but they split it into two, as well as changed the storyline from the original game, much to others displeasure.

Dark Souls Remastered - Looks better and runs better, and that's all. It's the exact same game, but it's only slightly prettier. Cheap.

Links Awakening DX seems to be the only straight upgrade I've noticed in the last few remasters to come out. That and Crash Bandicoot, where they completely supercede their older versions.

Apparently Skyward Sword did exactly nothing to cut down on backtracking in the third act. Why? This was the perfect opportunity to do so :/

It seems like remakes change too much, or their entirely faithful to a fault, changing no problematic elements in said games.

Discuss. Tell me I'm wrong even, or tell me remasters that are better than the originals that I've missed, it's just an opinion anyway.

Yeah, the FF7 remake will be a trilogy at least.

I disagree with you though, TC. I see the merit in both the Demon Soul's "let's just improve the graphics" and the FF7 "let's expand things." I think I prefer the latter, but I don't think there's much you can do to improve some games.

It's gonna be funny seeing all the PS4/XB1 remakes on the PS5 when many will just pretty much be a visual update and that's about it.

I will say I'm not too annoyed over Skyward Sword since you can actually play it with a controller now, however the $60 price point is laughable.

it isnt though, its a bad coat of paint. A really REALLY bad coat of paint. If it was actually a preservationist 1:1 gameplay but upgraded, it would be the perfect way to remake that game, but it isnt. Its a desecration

Yeah, I feel like they've been lazy as fuck nowadays.

Though being honest, Link's Awakening and FF7 Remake is more what I'm expecting. Full remakes. But if not that, at least fix some of the bad parts of games. Or add in higher texture stuff.

I don't understand how all these games get shit for being too close to the original but the Link's Awakening remake doesn't get shit despite being a 1:1 replica of the game world so there's absolutely nothing new of any worth to find aside from the throwaway build-a-dungeon thing.

You want an updated remake of an old 2D game, look at Metroid: Zero Mission.

I'm confused as to what the actual complaint is here. You're both praising and criticising games for either being a 100% remake (Crash Bandicoot, Demon/Dark Souls) or changing things (FF7R). The latter you don't even seem to criticise as you're just noting other people's criticisms.

I strongly preferred the GBA/GC era or remakes where companies would add in new features to games to give them a "fresh" experience (e.g. GBA FF remakes, Pokmon FR/LG).

Nowadays it feels like they just slap the exact same old game onto new platforms; even worse when they don't even do that and just run an old, poorly-optimized ROM on the system instead.

I hate the Dark Souls remaster because the metal textures on the armors look like plastic to me. And then you cant even buy the original version on Steam anymore, if you want it legitimately on your pc you have to get the remastered version, such bullshit.
