Why is her special Second Run weapon a revolver that's not only worse than the two different handguns she gets but also replaces all of the handgun ammo with bullets specifically for it?

Its good for spam firing. And you can just craft some regular handgun ammo.

They really REALLY should have made those guns use regular handgun ammo or just made them infinite ammo weapons though.

Both Leon and Claire get alternate .45 pistols for their B games. I guess for varietys sake and to make sense of the fact that the other character is picking up all the 9mm laying around so someone has to use a .45 instead. Capcom also took the opportunity to create more tie-ins to the original using those guns.

Anyway Claires Single Action revolver is actually really powerful, far and away the most damaging pistol in the game apart from magnums, just dont fire quickly. Seriously 6 rounds is more than enough to down Mr. X if you focus each shot, IIRC. Even though it has an impressive rate of fire, you typically dont want to make use of it and just take slow headshots. You need to keep it topped up whenever possible since you have to manually eject the spent casings before loading new rounds. Treat it like a shotgun in that sense.

The animations are a little goofy in general tbh. Like when Claire's injured, she'll hold her side for a bit and then drop her hand. But if you're running while she does it, her hand just kinda jiggles limply.

I've reached the point where I no longer care about handgun ammo of any kind, so that's good.

I am curious though. I was operating under the idea that the grenade launcher was Claire's shotgun equivalent and the SMG was her magnum, but it seemed like SMG ammo was much, much more common. Do I have it backwards?

Not really backwards, theyre all just different weapons. Generally speaking though the grenade launcher is Claires power weapon that should be saved for stronger enemies and bosses. Although she gets a budget magnum as well once you upgrade her revolver and find some magnum ammo. But yeah the grenade launcher is kind of a waste on zombies whereas the shotgun is Leons bread and butter. The SMG suits this role better for Claire (I tend to just destroy the zombies legs with it and run past).

Yeah, that makes sense.

I think I made the beginning of the game much harder by overly hoarding ammo. I was able to kill Birkin's third form with just acid rounds because I had thirty of them.
