Does this worry you?

Catching COVID-19 is said to cause "substantial" drop in INTELLIGENCE in people recovering from the virus according to british research who examined the IQ of over 81000 people across the UK.

13,000 caught the virus and were found to have the largest drop off in intelligence

People recovering from it found problem solving, planning and reasoning more difficult compared to people who never got the virus

And virus survivors who had to be on ventilators lost the equivalent of 7 IQ points

This "brain fog" has already been reported by sufferers for weeks, even months recovering from it and some lost the ability to recall everyday facts or hold a conversation

It sparked fears the disease causes long term cognitive impacts in a similar way to the lasting efects of strokes or microbleeds

The scientists from the UK and the USA published this as they asked respondants various questions to test their mental capacities and those who had covid had a lower cognitive score than they were modelled to have if they not been infected based on age, sex and occupation .

People who are hospitalized lose the most IQ points as the the longer the disease takes hold of them, the more of their IQ is dropped and anybody who has long term of the virus will have their IQ damaged severely

Do you think this is true that COVID can cause brain cells being lost?

Researchers in Britain were able to conclusively measure a drop in intelligence as they did a country wide intelligence test in 2019, and were able to use those results against new results. For those that did not participate in the national test in 2019, they based their findings on a number of factors to extrapolate what their intelligence should have been prior to covid.

Yeah it's kinda hard to tell when the bar is so low to begin with, but I feel like he became more deranged after leaving the hospital. He still thinks he's president, and the people around him are encouraging him.

The opposite, covid will attack your dongus and cause extreme shyness in the presence of stimulation.

This isn't particularly surprising. It makes sense that a disease that causes major circulatory issues and respiratory difficulties would cause some brain damage, simply because the brain's going to have less oxygen available to work with for a few weeks.

I wouldnt think that would even be clinically significant, especially considering what a lousy barometer for intelligence and mental function IQ tests happen to be

this entire thing seems bunk

Maybe that's less of the virus and more of the induced coma.

Perhaps (you could test that hypothesis by finding data on IQ loss following induced comas, incidentally), but if surviving the virus requires an induced coma, that distinction is largely academic.

I imagine data on induced coma might be difficult because it's most often implemented for traumatic brain injuries and loss of cognitive function is already expected. You would need data on perfectly healthy people being placed in a coma to truly isolate the variable.

Conversely, data on people who tested positive but never developed symptoms would isolate the variable of infection from the treatment.

Is there a "Standardized" IQ test? I know they're gonna ask you some "obvious" questions, make your brain do a little number crunching and whatnot. And maybe weigh and measure your response times / accuracy. What I care to know is are these things standardized. Otherwise what even is IQ besides a "you did this good" rating?

Whatever the limitations of IQ, it does provide an internally consistent metric. You can't necessarily say "having an IQ of 94 makes you dumb compared to everyone else," but you can say "your IQ has gone from 94 to 87, which is a measurable decline in that aspect of your cognitive function." Ideally, there would be other metrics of cognitive function to get a more comprehensive picture of the effects, but losing an average of 7 IQ points is still significant and worth reporting.
