Earlier today I watched a streamer set the world record speedrun time for the game.

He wasn't even going for it, he was doing a solo character speedrun.

Turns out he was the first to do a speedrun barring someone having done it and simply hadn't submitted it. :l

bard is amazing in the pixel remaster
at high job levels its healing song heals like 700 for free which is the same as curaga
viking has amazing defense and can draw attacks to itself with its ability

using those 2 jobs with auto battle makes you basically invincible in random encounters so its a great combo for grinding.

i named the 4 characters after the DS FF3 characters
so the one i named refia i gave all the jobs that looked a bit like a woman
so she started out as a red mage, then spent time as a scholar, then spent a long time as a bard. a very short time as a devout before getting the sage job

Wait til you get to the dungeon you have to clear while Mini, and can only attack by using magic because you do utterly pitiful damage otherwise.

Just did it. The last boss basically consists of spamming spells and praying it doesn't target the same target twice with Fira/Blizzara/Thundara which of course it can cast endlessly

much easier in the remake thanks to them removing the job changing penalty so its no problem to just turn everyone into a black mage and kill the boss in the mini area

It starts hard, but if you have a good combination of jobs later on, then roughly the second half of the game is a cakewalk.

I don't recall FF3 even having a plot...

It's mostly just a bunch of random, disconnected events that eventually lead to some sort of final boss.

Goldar's mansion was the halfway point, you're making decent progress. The whole game is barely 20 hours long.

There should be some optional dungeons available to you after Garuda. Check under the water on the triangle shaped island, there's decent loot in there. Also, if you're feeling up to it, you can take on Odin by diving at the southeast corner of the kingdom where you fought Garuda.

Just flee or use magic.

When you get some katanas, dark knights can use physical attacks on splitting enemies without causing them to multiply. (But the geniuses at Square dont give you katanas until you finish the first cave with splitting enemies lol)

Garuda was always bullshit because even with 4 Dragoons the speed system can fuck you.

*Your characters land with Jump*
*Garuda hits your entire team for massive damage*

Next turn
*Garuda goes first this time and kills your party with Thunder*

Maybe I just wasn't getting something when I played.

Endgame is one of the worst cases of fake difficulty though.

The gimmick dungeons are annoying, but I give them slack since this was their first time giving players the ability to hotswap classes. In theory it's nice that they tried to make unique areas that encouraged thinking about party comp. In practice, they shouldve ditched job levels. (But hey, at least they ditched the Capacity mechanic. <_<)

FF3 had a dungeon where you had to frog/toad your party then un-frog them, repeat to get around. Then another dungeon where you had to use Mini the same way.

I don't think I ever made it past the Temple of Time...

I too got tired of the gimmicky dungeons.
I already mentioned Nepto Shrine (where you have to be Mini), but also Goldor's Mansion, the fight with Garuda, and that cave where enemies split every time you attack them (which I'm pretty sure I blocked from memory due to PTSD, I didn't recall it until it was brought up here...)

So yeah, FF3 isn't for the faint of heart. It throws a lot of weird shit at you.

those dungeons are designed to make use of the job change system
it was the first time final fantasy used it and they went a little overzealous with catering dungeons and bosses for certain jobs

like the enemies that split everytime they are attacked do not split when attacked by a dark knight
the problem on the nes was that the jobs were only useful for short periods of time and then couldnt keep up anymore once their one gimmick dungeon was done limiting your overall choices
no job in the original nes can compete with the ninja and the sage which you get at the very end of the game.

the pixel remaster boosted a lot of jobs so you arent railroaded into making a team of 2 ninja and 2 sages. you probably will still use a ninja and a sage but you can have a more diverse final party in the PR version at least :)

imo Hector or whatever the fuck that guys name was is probably the hardest boss in the game, relative to when you fight him. He's essentially a level check, and not even the final dungeons tend to hit you that hard. If you can get past him it's mostly smooth sailing.
