Tried to watch Akudama Drive, but it came across "too" forced in the episode I saw. I usually like those seedier crime shows too.

Finished Angel Beats. The stakes could have been fleshed out more with the "antagonists" near the end, but I'd be lying if I said the ending itself wasn't powerful as shit regardless. The show really hit hard when it needed to.

I thought it was quite solid in the first half, but then the back half changed the tone significantly and my enjoyment plummeted. It wasn't unwatchable, but it wasn't really what I signed up for.

You kind of have to go into Akudama Drive knowing you're getting the full Kodaka experience in every way shape and form minus the literal Danganronpa branding.

There was even a short amount of time where I thought it might become a secret Danganronpa spinoff. Wouldn't be the first time a series suddenly revealed itself to secretly have been Danganronpa all along part way through!

I can't say I am familiar with any of that. I just knew it was about expert criminals doing what they're good at, and for a time it delivered that in spades. Then plot started getting in the way.

It's not a ton of new stuff. Some minor animation cleanup, and the double length episode structure definitely feels better. A little extra dialogue about halfway through to deal with stuff that was originally cut that shouldn't have been. It ads one. 1 more scene at the VERY end, but that was really just a teaser and was also at the beginning of season 2.

There's no reason NOT to watch that version though, if you were gonna watch the show.

After a few shows didn't grab me, I settled on something called Ergo Proxy. Either I watched the show once and didn't get it, or watched a show just like it and confused it for something else. All I know is the first ep was VERY odd, but in a way that grabbed my attention. Like some weird ass sci-fi horror or something. Maybe I'm in the mood for something fucked up. I'll see if further eps keep my attention.

Not sure if anyone here would be interested in this sort of thing, but I've started reviewing some of the anime I've been watching lately. Did Psycho-Pass a couple weeks ago, and reviewed Shield Hero Season 1 last week.

Just felt like a way to utilize all my anime binge watching for a purpose for a change. At least if some trolls don't go, "Stick with LPs lol", fucking Youtube trolls.

This arc of Rezero is really picking up! Betelguese is an amazing villain.

Still have lots of reserves about the dialogue writing, it's just all too anime for me, but I appreciate that it's trying to go into territory few dare venture with its characters.

Genius. To bad she was last spotted in Mariejoi so she won't be showing up any time soon. I'm still hoping she is hiding with Sabo and Vivi somewhere, helping them escape.

Just read the latest One Piece.
As someone who has long denied both Zoro being from Wano and us eventually seeing Zoro's father. I have been thoroughly proven wrong. Didn't think it was needed but it did make for a great moment with awesome parallels so I'm happy to be wrong.

Also, not sure why trying a dub is still a "I'm horrified or stuck with it" zero sum game. I think we were past that point in 02-05. Still shit dubs on ocassion...but at maybe a 5-10% situation anymore.

At least this isn't the Anime board itself. You'd think watching dubs would be akin to suffering a plague. One guy in a sea of millions said, "The bottom floor of dub quality is way less shit now, even if the ceiling isn't still very high."

Around the internet, that is high praise somehow. People are dicks.

Dubs have mostly dettled down. There's still a trend I see where people will take a 5 to 10 second clip of a dub they think is horrible and try to push it as DUBS ARE NIGHTMARISH, when really they're just looking for problems where there are none. Typically you'll be fine.

The only high profile dubs of the last 10 years I can even remember being bad off the top of my head are are Madoka and Netflix Eva.

The only dubs I remember preferring sub for was Love Hina and...Love Hina. But that was more a case of decent actors being miscast and prononciating everything wrong (probably weak ass direction), so it was just a mess across the board. Slice of Life is where this tends to happen most, because "hey goofy comedy, we don't have to try."

I don't even think Madoka Magica was bad. Haven't watched Netflix Eva...because it's Eva. I'd have to be drunk or high to watch that again.

Netflix Eva is totally fine for some people but just can't stand it myself. Not the actor's fault really, it's the director. It also has the uncommon circumstance of having to be compared directly to other US dubs (with the new release coming to Bluray we're going to have 3 damn dubs of this thing, even if one of them is just a redub with most of the original cast).

Madoka though...never really going to get over how terrible I think that dub is. Legitimately a circumstance where if someone only watched it dubbed I would say they need to rewatch the show from the beginning. Don't know how anyone can stand it.

It's tough to dub bombasticly voiced comedy anime. Even if you do a good job you're almost certainly going to get compared negatively. A lot of it is that even if you nail the voice inclinations of the original...the honest truth is that a lot of anime fans are going to think some of that stuff sounds awkward when they actually hear it in their native language, whether they want to admit it or not.

Can you imagine how difficult it would be to dub Asobi Asobase for example? No wonder they haven't even tried.

However it absolutely is possible to make a dub of a show like this that the general viewership latches onto, or even thinks surpasses the original. Just look at Cromartie!

The biggest con I have against the dub is massively inferior EXPLOSION. Rie Takahashi just puts so much energy into each and every one and while Erica Mendez is a solid dub VA her explosions are much weaker vocally. Maybe Takashis just sounds cooler because of the novelty of it being in English, but it does feel like Mendez isnt shouting it loud enough
