I've liked dubs since day one. While yes, shows can have bad actors or direction, they are the exception rather than the rule (post 90s anyway). I think there many quality actors that don't get a lot of credit for solid work in most cases. Most anime actors work in video games too, so I am well used to the same actor crop, but know I can usually trust them to be good.

The main issue isn't I don't think sub actors aren't better or worse in their native language or whatever (they should be). But the internet as a rule seems to outright be dismissive or antagonistic to a fault anytime "dub" is uttered for ANY reason. It could be the "vocal minority being louder and drowning out everything else," but I don't know).

Watch what you want. I like dubs for many reasons (most of all because I am legally blind and CAN'T really watch subs properly). But the fact options exist, everyone SHOULD be happy and positive they can watch it how they like.

It seems like one of those "Dark Souls shouldn't have Easy Mode/GITGUD," meme arguments too. "shrugs"

I prefer subs but dubs are on the whole quality stuff. I really enjoy the Mob and Hero Academia dubs especially.

The biggest problem I've seen with most dubs is the minor characters. The main cast will be solid but there'll usually be a few side characters who suck.

I think dubs are fine for the most part unless the setting is in Japan and requires cast to say Japanese names over and over

Another case to avoid dubs are comedies, the original voices will always be better at delivering the punchlines

Oh, the other thing I think is a problem with dubs is how closely they try to match the Japanese voices sometimes, especially high-pitched female voices, which usually don't work as well in English. They should be more willing to change it to something that sounds more natural.

Yeah, the main reason I avoid dubs is because even the weird anime girl moans make me cringe less than hearing cheesy lines in the typical anime girl voice. At least in Japanese I don't understand it enough to cringe.

I'd also add that a lot of shows I watch deal with big Japanese cultural/language things which just wouldn't come across in English - Asobi Asobase, Saiki K, Oregairu and Hyouka come to mind, plus I'm learning Japanese and subs really help me make connections between words and beat certain ideas into my brain. I think dub is good or even preferable for anyone who can't read quick and enjoys mostly action-based stuff and shounen, since those tend to get the best dubs and are also impacted the least by translation.

As far as good dubs go, I LOVE the JJK dub. I think I like it better than the sub, even!

I'm not learning Japanese with any real intent but I think this is actually a big reason I prefer subs personally. I just like listening to foreign languages and kind of learning by repeating phrases and stuff.

Well you originally said the only version you had available was the dub. Since you have access to Crunchy that means the sub is available to you too and Im fairly sure they have the dub as well on there

What I meant was, the only version available from the services Im already subscribed to is the dub. I looked at churchyroll, but it seemed like you needed a sub to watch most/all of the show.

Oh, I watched both seasons for free on Crunchy. Usually the subscription only is for movies or brand new episodes and stuff

Ergo Proxy is fucking messed up. Thought it was gonna be a dystopian, sci-fi thriller like PSYCHO-PASS, but (halfway through) it has more in line with EVA or NieR in aesthetics and vibe. Really good, but it can be a mindfuck at times.

Though..should I ask why there was an entire episode devoted to a quiz show?

Edit: Re-L waxing poetic about the subtleties of taking an hour to show and put on makeup, and Vincent not putting the seat down is way more engaging and makes more sense. If you're gonna do filler, give character interaction silly stupid shit like this to do.

Been binge watching some older stuff recently that I had never previously seen and I'm kinda sad that A. I waited so long to watch it and B. That I've finished them. In the last month I've watched HxH, FMA Brotherhood, Steven Universe in their entirety and all 3 were fantastic. Steven Universe is the one that really caught me off guard for how good it is (especially the catchy songs) as I knew the reputation the other two had.

Also watched Is it wrong to try pick up girls in the dungeon which was decent but nowhere near the same level. I tried to watch JoJo's bizarre adventure and I just couldn't get into it, I stopped at some point in the second episode. I feel like there's something else I watched too but I can't recall what.

So now I'm looking for something new to watch. Maybe Adventure Time. Or another older show I should have watched by now but haven't. I know stuff like Bleach, Naruto and Fairy Tail is supposed to be good but the sheer number of episodes is daunting as I dislike filler and there has to be a ton in those right?

The Owl House (ongoing)

Infinity Train (nebulous if this is done or not, but it's basically an anthology series regardless)
Gravity Falls (completed)

And then Adventure Time as you mentioned, obviously. Also, just in case you missed it since streaming services tend to split them, the SU movie and SU Future.

If you want something truly amazing watch S1 of Invincible so long as you arent allergic to superhero stuff

Invincible is great but Steven Universe -> Invincible isn't really a path, lol. If we're hitting that territory then I'm gonna recommend Bojack Horseman, Archer, and Castlevania as well.

Haha in fairness I havent seen a single one of the shows you suggested myself, but I definitely plan to get to some of them. The only animated anything Ive been watching recently is the 1992 X-Men series.

I have not actually seen this one, is it good? The art seems iffy, but after being completely blown away by how good Final Space is after the initial impressions from the visuals that it was some kind of Seth MacFarlane adjacent material, I'm open to giving ANYTHING a try with a reliable recommendation.

I saw the SU Movie but not future. I didn't see that on HBO Max so will have to look it up elsewhere.

I've seen Invincible (and loved it). Also seen Bojack and Archer but not Castlevania. I've not see any in that list though.

Also throwing it out there that after watching the SU conclusion and especially the movie that Rose Quartz is an impulsive jerk who didn't think through the consequences of her actions. There was no need for her to be so secretive or not make any attempt to try help clean up her galactic mess. And what she did to Spinel was horrendous. I get that a large part the show is that everyone is flawed and that it's ok to be that way but it really feels like she could and should have done more than what she did.

Castlevania is "Guy has whip, kill Dracula" for plot. The show exploits this and kinda does its own thing with the characters that exist.

Season 1 is amazing
Season 2 is amazing, and way more story heavy about "Castlevania stuff"
Season 3 is world building to Season 4 (if weaker than the rest)
Season 4 is about 2-3 high point battles, but oh god are they glorious

Watched season 1 of Castlevania. I'm liking it so far. Gave me Witcher vibes. I knew who Alucard was from the contests but didn't realize he was a vampire despite the obvious name

Trevor is the main character of Castlevania 3, the game that introduces Alucard. Its not strictly that game animated but its cool they used an nes game as the base.

I'm not sure Dracula is ever depicted quite so sympathetically in the games, but I've played maybe half of them.

At most, SOTN gives the most backstory to Dracula, Alucard, and Lisa. Still isn't near what this show delves into though.

Bleach has this interesting case where a pair of characters were created for a filler arc, but they ended up appearing in the final arc of the manga and being plot relevant too.

Of course for all we know, Kubo could have planned for that all along.

The neptunia anime has an amazing dub. Part of this though is the localization as from what I know the actual dialog is often a little more tame

I never read the final arc, who are they?

Did they reference the filler arc at all or was it just a case where they showed up but as 'new' characters?

That probably means he just liked the design and used it given other zanpakuto's definitely did not match the filler.

Or he had already planned a couple of them so he gave them the designs. Something like how Golden Shiki from One Piece Strong World is real but the movie is still non-canon.
