Best Miyazaki film other than Spirited Away

I just watched Kiki's Delivery Service and was surprised to find that I liked it more than any of his other films that I've seen. Perhaps I just like the less surreal stuff, I don't know. Discuss.

Well, Spirited Away isn't even number 1. But it's Totoro followed closely by Howl's.

Castle in the Sky for me (even without the Spirited caveat). Though Mononoke is great, as is... well, pretty much everything listed!

Don't like the idea that Spirited Away is default #1 or something. Princess Mononoke would still be winning here.

The real shame is that Porco Rosso has no votes! That's my #2.

Because it was a huge American theatrical release pushed by Disney that won the Oscar.

Nobody is pretending that Spirited Away isn't the most POPULAR in the west, but that's the results of circumstance.

It's like how Tales Of Symphonia is the most popular and well known Tales game over here.

Kiki > Totoro > Spirited Away imo

Regarding whether Spirited Away is the defacto number one: It totally is, but if you really want to make the question interesting you should take out Princess Mononoke too. At least on B8, there are huge popularity gaps between Spirited, Mononoke, and everything else.

Just to underscore how revered Spirited Away is, it is on 38 official lists on icheckmovies.com. There are maybe ten other films that are at or above that number (we're talking The Godfather, Citizen Kane, 2001, etc.).

Mononoke is the next highest Miyazaki film with 17 lists.

I think I gotta go with Ponyo. Miyazaki's films are typically whimsical and have little to no story (with some exceptions, of course), and I think Ponyo was whimsical, fantastical, light-hearted, and visually engaging enough that the lack of a story didn't really bother me.

Mononoke
Porco
Spirited
Wind
Kiki's
Nausicaa
Totoro
Castle in the sky
Howl's
Ponyo

think my favorite is totoro. it really captures what's so unique about miyazaki - the reverence for nature, the magic of being a child, the struggles of little people, the power of community, the love of a family/community

it still feels jarring watching it and seeing how it shuns so many of the tropes you might expect in a movie about a kid who sees a magical spirit that their parents cannot

I always watch them dubbed because the English voice talent for Miyazaki films in particular is fantastic. Also animation is much "cleaner" to dub than live action, obviously.

Miyazaki films are kinda like Pixar in that they are (mostly) all so good that opinions are just all over the place and I love it.

I voted for Princess Mononoke though because you asked what the best movie was, not what my favorite was. My favorite is Howl's Moving Castle. Maybe. It's honestly really hard to decide.

Spirited Away (#5 all-time)
Princess Mononoke (#57 - probably higher after a recent re-watch, I forgot how intense the atmosphere is throughout)
My Neighbor Totoro (#80)
Nausicaa (#438)
Castle in the Sky (#565)
Howl's Moving Castle (#938)
Kiki's Delivery Service (sub-1000)
The Wind Rises
Porco Rosso
Ponyo
The Castle of Cagliostro

All good movies or better, but the top 3 really stick out to me.

Voted for Howl but for real, Whisper of the Heart wins for me and honorable mention goes to When Marnie was There, which is not Miyazaki, but you can take a deep breath and deal with it.

I like anime, but Ghibli/Miyazaki never really grabbed me like it did with many other fans of the medium. The animation is dazzling, but it doesn't have enough dedicated character development for me.

Good call, I'd like to see more of his. I've seen Castle in the Sky that he produced and apparently he did musical werk on Kiki's Delivery Service. I've meant to watch Anne of Green Gables [Akage no An] and Dog of Flanders.

Only Yesterday and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya are both fantastic, imo. Only Yesterday is one of my all-time fav films. Takahata didn't stick to a single genre or even animation style though, so there's likely to be at least one of his films you're fond of!

Also it's not Takahata or Miyazaki but Whisper of the Heart is great too, sadly it was the only film directed by Yoshifumi Kondo before his passing.

Princess Mononoke is their best period, the end. I have not seen Cagliostrio, Porco Rosso, or Wind Rises.

I will nominate When Marnie Was There for very underrated Ghibli film, its great.

I'm surprised not to see Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko, and Arietty on here, but I know you only had so many options.
