Good call, I'd like to see more of his. I've seen Castle in the Sky that he produced and apparently he did musical werk on Kiki's Delivery Service. I've meant to watch Anne of Green Gables [Akage no An] and Dog of Flanders.

Specific recs? Anything I should not miss?

Ghibli films: Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Grave of the Fireflies, and Only Yesterday are all must-watch. Pom Poko isn't quite as good as those three, but it's a lot better than it's reputation and definitely worth watching if you're into Takahata. You should probably skip My Neighbors the Yamadas unless you're a completionist.

Pre-Ghibli work: Anne of Green Gables is the best of Takahata's TV series and just an amazing show in general. As for his pre-Ghibli films, they tend to be interesting because they feel like prototypes for various kinds of movies Ghibli would eventually make. Horus Prince of the Sun (Miyazaki-esque action/adventure), Panda Go Panda (Miyazaki-esque light-hearted slice-of-life) are both fun watches in that regard.

I'm surprised not to see Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko, and Arietty on here, but I know you only had so many options.
Not Miyazaki
