I know there are jerks on either end of the political spectrum. Some people become liberals because it lets them be smarmy assholes about everything. Some people become conservatives because it lets them be mad at the world and say that everyone is wrong about everything. But I don't understand why so many on the right would want the US to remain dependent upon Middle Eastern oil.

Now, two disclaimers:
1) I would never want to use bigotry as a selling point. We can all burn beneath a depleted ozone layer before that happens.
2) Not all conservatives are bigots.

It seems odd to me that there would be an overlap between people who want to maintain a dependence on fossil fuels and people who hold generalizations about Arabs and Muslims. One would think that they would be wanting electric cars so that America didn't have to do business with places like Saudi Arabia. I know it goes back to the contingent on the right that likes to be mad all of the time, the ones that say boo on everything, but it seems to me like there's a definite contradiction.

If nothing else, they could always boast how it was American ingenuity that freed us from fossil fuel dependency.

Because the opposition is for it. That's why.

I mean, it's in the name conservative. Their beliefs and legislation literally center around "the good ol' days." They aren't there to get things done, they're there to block things from happening.

as unpopular as domestic and offshore drilling is among environmentalists, ending us dependency on foreign oil was a major selling point for it in conservative politics

fossil fuels are certainly an issue given how unclean and unsustainable they are longterm, but expanding use of nuclear power seems to be a radioactive (pun intended) proposal in itself, despite the cleanliness and cost effectiveness

renewable sources, despite the tremendous advancements made in recent years, are not sufficient to sustain the entire economy - yet, anyway
