It's certainly not perfect. If your BMI is like 27 or so you are technically overweight, but you can certainly be healthy at that range. But if your BMI is like 35 or something and you aren't a bodybuilder then you probably need to lose some.

It's a metric meant to measure populations, not individuals.

but regardless of metrics visceral fat is unhealthy. That is fat that surrounds your organs. If you have a beer belly, you have visceral fat. She seems to be a beer belly with a head and limbs poking out. Her pancreas is screaming. Her kidneys cry out. But her metabolism just sits there and says "no."

Modern day body builders seem to have early deaths as well. I don't think someone at 5'11" is supposed to be 330 pounds even if it is all muscle.

It's a meaningful metric in more than 80% of the population. The top 5% are incredibly muscular are are better off by a bf% test. The bottom 15% are "skinnyfat" and have normal BMI but at-risk BF%.

It's supposed to be a quick and dirty test, lmao.

Suspending that bitch in water via Archimedes method would also warn her about a looming health crisis.

Because the average person is not a medical expert and doesn't really need to know the intricacies of things like this. They should be consulting someone who is a medical expert for that - or if they really insist on DIY'ing it, at least doing proper research instead of trusting word-of-mouth from other non-experts or just going along with "something they heard" without looking into the full details.

This.

Most of the people that call it a "flawed" measurement like to talk about the top 5%.

I like to joke with my wife about how Saquon Barkley and myself are both 6-foot and weigh 234 pounds, so we're basically the same person, body-wise.

She seems to disagree.

because it's correct 80% of the time; it's good enough any anyone with a middle-school education can both perform the test and interpret results.

Most people who dislike what BMI tells them will also dislike what a more rigorous, expensive, and time consuming test will ALSO tell them -- or they're bodybuilders/athletes.

dividing your weight by the square of your height is not a "test"

whether or not they'll like it has absolutely no bearing on whether or not it, on its own, is a meaningful metric for overall health.

Good thing it's not used on its own as a meaningful metric for overall health by actual professionals, so there's no reason for you to make this argument other than to discredit BMI based on strawmanning it.

There is a big dark side to the fitness industry, that's for sure.

Steroids are a huge part in bodybuilders dying young, it is not a secret that pretty much all professional bodybuilders are on steroids, and the vast majority of fitness models too. The drugs themselves obviously have really negative side effects on all sorts of organs, but like you said, people are not meant to walk around as a 300 lb brick house w/ 6% bodyfat, and would never get that big naturally no matter how much you lift. Very stressful on the heart, which kills a lot of young bodybuilders.

Plus the nutrition supplement market is a free for all, you can sell the craziest shit w/ almost no oversight.

it can be used in conjunction with other metrics and tests to give a reasonable picture of overall health. but those other metrics give a reasonable picture of overall health without bringing BMI into it at all

Yeah, being that heavy for a long time isn't particularly great for you. You'll see a lot of NFL linemen lose weight when they retire since that body type isn't good for you long-term.

I propose that there isn't a single metric that provides a good snapshot.

but that aside, the fact that BMI correlates with Body Fat percentage (which I'll concede may be useful in conjunction with other metrics) does not mean that BMI itself is a useful metric.

as far as correlation with "overall health" goes though, off the top of my head I would suggest grip strength or vegetable consumption. both correlate more strongly than BMI with general health
