Great atmosphere, love the fact that literally every character is on a trackable schedule throughout the 72 hours. The Bomber Notebook is the real draw here. The main story is fine for a Zelda, but it's not what stuck with me.

Zelda's creepiest and most effective brush with darkness to date. A marked improvement over Ocarina, showing much more restraint in building a dreadful atmosphere, and executing masterful tension without relying heavily on the typical tropes that make up a Zelda experience. There's a profound sadness to the whole storyline, and you personally witness the daily struggles of citizens while you toil your way to an uncertain future. Thematically, Zelda has never been this exciting or emotionally connective with the player before or since.

This is my third 9.5 in a row. Great choices this week, Lightning!

Anyway, Majora's Mask is unique, dark, and ****ed up in all the right ways. It's almost as if Zelda and Silent Hill had a child together. There are plenty of YouTube videos out there that explore how Link is going through the five stages of grief, and it's mind-blowing to think a Nintendo game from 2000 bore that kind of subtext.

Aside from that, the daily lives of the people of Termina, the surprisingly emotional backgrounds of the Deku/Goron/Zora masks, and the worldbuilding/lore push this one up high IMO.

Only glaring flaw is that Link is a silent protag.

The main plot brings it down. The atmosphere and character realization, if you choose to follow up with them over the three day cycle, bring it way up.

The main story is pretty straightforward, but all the side plots and world-building more than make up for it. It's a rare game that does a lack of core story RIGHT by making everything else matter so much.

And yeah, Breath of the Wild has beautiful visuals, but the world itself doesn't have half the life that Majora's did.

Spot on. BotW feels like a videogame. Majora's Mask feels like a nightmare (in the best possible way).
