California's January spike would still be a fair bit worse than Texas. Texas's slightly greater rise in hospitalizations would look mildly higher, but as a trend they're following pretty closely. California is rising almost as fast, just a little bit later. The same thing happened in December. Wouldn't be surprised if Texas hospitalizations level off after a while and then California significantly overtakes them. The January spike for Cali, as a per capita it would be only slightly higher than Texas. Everywhere else on that chart, Cali is around equal or even less than Texas' total numbers despite having 33% more total population.
